Hello. I am going to skin a beaver tail to send to Speciality Leather in IA to be tanned. They have some basic instructions on how they want it but I was wanting to see if anyone had some specifics/tips. They say to get it 95% fleshed. I have never fleshed anything (pay someone else to do it). Any tips for fleshing? Any common knife/tool I may have to use? Thank you for your time.

Check out You-Tube on beaver tails, there are a couple well done vids on there on how to clean them up, a lot easier to see it done then explain on here, quicker to.

I always use my flat fleshing board clamp the fur end down and push away with a very sharp flat knife, be very careful to not go to deep as it will nick the skin and it will separate during tanning.

It will pay you to take the time to watch the vids.

You should practice on a couple that you don't care about losing !!

I thin the thick areas with a skiving knife. The tannery was impressed how supple they came out.

I fillet out the tail like a perch fillet. Then I nail the butt end to plywood and use a pull the paint scraper (Hyde brand) to flesh. Three or four strokes is about all it takes. I did a bunch up for Specialty last year and they turned out beautiful. I really like the mahogany stain.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
