It's just a matter of being in the right place and having patience. I've looked at wolverine population densities on the AK. Dept. of F&G site at least a couple of times and it looks to me based on their information it's a needle in a haystack proposition. I know you guys catch them, and some quite a few, but it looks like very few wolverine per thousand square miles if I was reading it right. If I ever hit Powerball, I'm moving back up there just to target those critters. There's nothing higher on my bucket list.

The one young one that Tim got was the nicest I have seen. For some reason, I wonder if females have better hair. Hormones or something ??
Female fishers have finer hair than the males so I'm not surprised that the closely related wolverines share the same trait.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

Despite what some might say, they have no reliable way to guesstimate wolverine numbers. When i was trapping up in the Logans there were places I could catch a wolverine almost any time I wanted. The area I trap now is heavy bush country. When I first started trapping that country I didnt think it would be good wolverine country. I was wrong. There are lots of them in the boreal forests, and they seem to like old burns too.

I was trying to hint that I’d rent a cabin to the right trapper if he wanted to jump through all the out of state hoops. I'm a pretty swell guy and someone here may vouch for me...if I buy them off. Tell me more.

No hoops to jump through here! Just book your trip and come catch one. Actually lots of guys on here have and we appreciate their business. How much time does a guy need to have a decent shot at catching one? Two weeks? I want one bad enough I'd consider doing it.

Just my opinion......if you were to go into an area that was unfamiliar, you might want to budget a month. But if you had someone like Dave with you it could possibly reduce that considerably.
Location is even more important in wolverine trapping than canine trapping IMO. I'd go with anyone you would recommend. Seems crazy to book something like that when I once lived there myself but limited experience and the opportunity to get into good country kept me from catching one when I was there. I would do it if it wasn't a super expensive deal. There's not much else on my to-do list.

Much better than striking out on your own. Im out there most of the winter so that helps too. I never set a wolverine trap anymore unless I have clients. They are that popular. Lots of hunters I guide in the fall come back up to trap. Also just a lot of trappers from the lower 48. They are by far my favorite animal to trap.

A client of ours took this one a couple years back. Real crazy story about this wolverine that I wrote about in FFG. We got two at one location which isnt that unusual, what was unusual is that a bowhunter I was guiding had taken the mother of these two 6-weeks previously off of a moose kill. The two yearlings never left the kill site in all that time. We didnt know there were three of them when we were hunting as all we saw was the big female. She was the prettiest wolverine I've ever seen. Males will kill the cubs so I think its likely that they do fight occasionally. Im throwing a picture of the lynx the same client caught on that trip. His taxidermist told him it was the best furred lynx he had ever seen. I guess he has mounted some from Russia that were close. Anyway the client is from PA and a taxidermist there did the work. That is a great wolverine mount. I'm also in favor of a more subtle look over a snarling mount.

I agree. I think they move enough that you can find them in most habitats. BUT, they vary temporally. As long as there is food around they will usually stick with it. I also believe that higher wolf populations result in greater wolverine densities. Based on that I would expect them to start showing up in Minnesota soon.

I was thinking of you. I've been fortunate to take a lot of big game animals over the years and the cost/price (bush charters, licenses, etc.) of collecting them probably wouldn't add up to what this would run me. A wolverine would make for a much smaller rug than a bear but there's nothing I'd rather see hanging on my wall. I'm leaning really hard toward it.

I'm trying to beat him down on price, would you please stop encouraging him? Just a point of reference........in 2010 Okiekajun came up and trapped with me for 10-11 days. He took several marten, fox, otter and wolverine. All in it probably cost him 12-13 thousand NOT counting taxi costs

BTW, I'd have come up there and spent some time with you in a heartbeat. I've never remotely considered something like this before. I am now. Believe me I considered that. But it will be much cheaper for you this way. And a LOT easier on my body !! Hahaha
