Hello. I have wondered about this for awhile. I used to be on a VW diesel board and someone would (very rarely) have a story about a new car/truck that used a little oil from the beginning. No matter the brand the dealers always had the same story that it was within specs/reason. Have/had bought new a Chevy Silverado, Honda Odyssey, & 2 VW Jettas. Total miles among those is/was 900K and not a drop of oil used. 5K mile oil changes on the Chevy with Quaker State. Others had/have Mobil 1 every 10K. Two years ago we bought a Mazda 3 car new. At 60K miles it consistently uses 1/2 quart every 7500 miles. Driven easy to normal. Never took it in for warranty as I knew they wouldn't do anything. Just kind of annoying but have heard stories every once in awhile of new cars/trucks using a lot more. All new vehicles we have bought have had 5 or less miles when we purchased. Anyone have any ideas on why a new car would use oil from day one?

Because they are built cheap and are lower quality than the older ones.

Poor maintenance and people drive them like race cars nowadays.

5k between oil changes may work for some, but not for those who think the gas pedal is an on/off switch.

I wouldn't complain about losing a pint of oil every 7500 miles. That's a lot of engine wear. I'd rather lose a pint than gain a pint!

Those new turbo engines and the lean fuel mixtures run HOT. A lot hotter than old school engines.

Interesting.
I have had new Silverado’s that took almost a quart to 5k since new. Never more nor less.
I’ve now got 3 grand cherokees, v6 and v8s none use oil.
My other vehicles don’t use any either. I always figured up to a quart per change was no big deal.
When I was young it seemed like every vehicle near 100 grande had a black cloud behind it. Times have changed.

I run synthetic oil to 8k on most vehicles, some more if they are used primarily on pavement. Hunting rigs and vehicles that do serious time on dirt roads I go about 4K between changes and use cheaper non synthetic oil. I never scrimp on the filters in any of them.

They shouldn't, but quality control is pathetic in today's industry.
I'd be back to the dealership getting to the bottom of it

cause it's a dodge

ok maybe all of them aren't

we rented a mini van one time when we flew in , picked it up at the air port , a few miles out of the lot it had a lot of lifter noise so we pulled over at a gas station and checked the oil level

dodge caravan it was not even touching the dip stick

took 2 quarts at the gas station to get into the hashes cheaper than getting stuck on the side of the road and less time consuming than an hour at the rental place.

it had less than 1000 miles on it

this was Atlanta 1996 a few months before the Olympics

I would guess some one under filled it at the factory probably a Monday morning Friday afternoon

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Yep. Need to change the oil far more often than the idiot light tells you to. Seen them use 5 quarts in 3000 miles.

I think it’s because the cylinders have tighter tolerances, causing higher temps with increased friction. My Subaru Forester will use about a quart in 6000 miles.

I bought two pickup trucks brand new and both of them would use a quart or 2 between oil change till about 50,000 . Diesels
I got a 2015 6.0 gas now and it uses no oil I run mobil 1 in it and go up to 15,000 between oil change s.
Just make sure that you pamper them in break-in, lol or do like I do run them like a rental from day one.
