Last year I had one in a trap that got really worked over. Tore out huge patches of hair and part of his tail. He was still alive, but so tired from fighting them off he could barely stand. A couple of inches of snow on the ground told me there was several. They had the ground tore up in a 15 ft circle.

And that's why I believe some coyotes are circle shy.

I skin coyotes constantly that have bites. I’d say 5% of mine have some sort of bit damage to the rump area. Had a small one the other day that really got it. Lots of bits across her back.

Dispatched coyote in trap today. Was a female in-heat. Now I’m curious if another female was attacking her, or a male. Couldn’t tell if it worked any sets because it started snowing soon after the pic.

My observation has been that animals that tend to be solitary but not overly territorial are happy live and let live but herd or pack animals (especially the ones who are territorial) are hard on another critter of their own or a rival species.

A badger walks right by another badger in a trap but a coyote might sometimes treat another of his own species purdy badly. I would guess this goes along with Ray Hunt's ideas about the pecking order.

I witnessed a feral dog get caught In one of my sets. The rest of the pack walked In to check out what was going on. The caught dog took a bite at one of his mates probably In the panic mode. Then the fight commenced.

After skinning you could see bites all in the back legs. Another female today, off the same property, had a gash on her throat. No pics of that one getting attacked though.

Have seen that with whitetail deer and turkey shoot one and the others go after the dead one, easy picking in the pecking order.

I trapped coyotes in a different area this year and found a fair amount of the ones I caught had been worked over at one time or another. Started putting more sets closer together and started catching doubles.
