use old time shellac one pint all you need do 2 coats and pack basket is good for many many years. soaks in and really protects the wood

BLO boiled linseed oil I use it on almost everything wood

Thanks for the replies. Haven't had one in years and got one yesterday and just need to finish it. I thought I had remembered shellac (was 40 years ago though) but then was told polyurethane, what a friend used on his close to 40 years ago too. At the one store they only had spar urethane. Guess it's exterior and breathes with the wood? Says not to mix (coats) the two.
