Does anyone add BTO to their ground meat based baits for coyotes? If so, can you suggest an amount per gallon to start out with? I know I'll have to do development to get the mix ratio I'm looking for, just looking for a starting point.

Thanks all!

Scott that's a good question hope someone responds. I have some beaver and bobcat I'd like to try a make some bait. Nothing special just something to throw down a dirt hole. I wanted it fresh,no taint, some BTO and castor that's it. I plan on using lure I just want something for the target animal to eat on if it misses my set

Following this. I was actually all over the forums over the weekend ready info on BTO. I made a lure this season that I have had really good luck with, and was wanting to make something different to pair with it. I like using stuff that uses as many ingredients that I can make or harvest myself for quality and personals enjoyment/satisfaction.

I’ve not made it with just BTO, but I’ve made it using equal parts BTO, Spoonbill oil, and Gator oil. Try a small batch first at 1oz each per pint of each (that’s the ratio I used). It takes a bit for the gator to tame down in my experience.

Matt did you have any luck with that ratio? I was under the impression that BTO as well as the gator were pretty stout stuff

I did. They really dig for it in a hole. The BTO has a much sweeter smell to me than the gator. The gator is flat out awful lol. But the 3 of them combined (BTO, Gator, spoonbill) seems to be something they like. I’ve given some away and others have had similar experiences. Kytrapper on here is the person that convinced me to add the spoonbill so I owe him credit for the success. The first set that I had worked when I tried it was a large step down dirt hole. Apparently the pan tension was set too high bc he dug so much dirt out on top of my trap, that I literally thought he had taken my trap! That was early in the season. They’re still working it in the cold but not to that extent. Incidentally, that ratio was also suggested to me when I asked at Southern Snares, where I got the gator oil.

Thanks for the info Matt, sounds like a winner. To clarify, you mixed equal parts (bto, gator, spoonbill) and used it straight as a lure, or did you mix it with a meat/bait base? If with a bait base, how much did you mix per gallon of meat, 1 oz? thanks!

Thanks Matt. It's not the only thing I'll add, but its a starting point to experiment with.

Matt - I was just going to ask where you got the gator oil, but you beat me to the punch.

As to the spoonbill oil, do you think you would have the same response with other fish oils? And I’m not talking salmon or trout but maybe home sun rendered oil from gizzard shad or something similar that is more available?

I have used the three ingredients (BTO, Gator oil, and Spoonbill oil) in formulation to make both a lure (combined with other musks and oils) and as a bait, with aged bobcat meat and ground deer liver and pork liver. The amount I used for the bait is what I quoted you bc you mentioned making a bait, not a lure, and I did use equal parts. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, I’m just saying that I’ve had good luck using the formulation I mentioned. I will tell you that if you make the bait as I mentioned, it has to be used in a hole, either a dirt hole or punch holes, but either way, it needs to be underground or a coyote will roll in it at first opportunity. It’s not something I tuck into a grass clump at a baited flat set. I’ve not tried any other oils, only the spoonbill oil. My goal in this formulation was to make a bait that a coyote would dig for. I have read that each of the 3 ingredients will elicit that type of response, so I chose to use all 3 in combination. I haven’t figured out how to quote a question and respond to it, so I’m trying to respond to each question here. The amount I quoted (1 oz of each of the 3) is what I added to to one pint of my combined aged bobcat, deer liver, pork liver, meat base.
