I dont like the idea of using a bodygrip as a foothold. They are not designed for that. You will catch some, maim some and miss a lot educating them in the process.. Much better to use a properly designed foothold for foothold trapping applications set on a prositive drowning system. Wiring up all that fencing is not really necessary,a few guide sticks will serve the exact same purpose with a lot less time and effort.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
A 220 is a mediocre beaver trap even when used correctly. It’s a terrible anything trap when stuck flat like that. How often do you expect you’d find it half closed with a couple sticks or some gravel in the bottom pair of jaws propping it open?
Anyone watch the video? I have and the point of the video was not that 220s are a good beaver trap. He opened the video by quoting Clint Locklear that a good experiment is to limit yourself to just one style or size of traps to fully learn just what it is capable of. That was the point of this video to test capability of 220s on beaver not as a advocate of 220s for beaver
Another thing is the general point of that youtube channel. The guy goes by the handle Meat Trapper and while he is indeed a fur and nuisance trapper the direction of the channel is meat or subsistence trapping from a prepper perspective.
Interesting. I Have watched a lot of Meat Trappers stuff and have learned some things from him. He is a very bright guy. As warrior pointed out, it was an experiment of sorts not an endorsement. I do understand the other posts too. It was an experiment. I do not typically set 220s for beaver but have caught some pretty good sized ones in sets made for otter.

T.C.Dawson would have a serious problem with the statement it's a mediocre beaver trap even when used correctly.
I was thinking of TC Dawson as well, seems he caught a lot of beaver in 220s. And had some good methods to make them efficient. Mid 80s he had quite a few stories in The Trapper.
GUK.....it's the sound they make when they hit the end of the cable
I've caught a few beavers in 220's because we have to completely submerge anything larger and the 220's fit where the beavers were going. I didn't use them as footholds though. I have 750's for that. The 220 is actually a great beaver trap if you can get them to stick their heads in it, its lights out FAST. It's going to be far easier to get them to stick their heads in a 330 though.
Hey GUK. How goes it? Did this tc Dawson lay it down as a foot hold?
I don’t recall his exact methods. But had a lot of articles in The Trapper over the years. I believe one article was even titled 220s for beaver. He had his reasons and was successful. I believe he worked at a Reynolds Aluminum plant somewhere in the south east US. I just remember reading of is success and his argument that a 220 was a fine beaver trap. I don’t recall any 220 as a foot bold sets. I hve some old issues of The Trapper in my shop, I will see if I can find an old TC Dawson article.

I didn’t say 220s are a bad beaver trap, I said they’re mediocre. Meaning in my opinion, they’ll do the job but there are better options for most situations
The post said the 220 was a mediocre trap even when used correctly. That's what I responded to.Dawson caught more beaver and otter in one season using 220s than most guys will catch in a lifetime .
