I recall the name, but don't think I ever talked with him. A name like that is hard to forget - lol.

Now a question. We see the $19 a month figure used on a whole lot of charity commercials on TV. Is there something special about that amount?

$19 a month was publicized so much by wounded warrior that it became an easier "sell" amount for others.

Nittany Lion,
I spent 27 months in Turkey, Did you spend any time in that wonderful place. I can still smell the Yeni Harmons.
Elkaholic, what speed of morse did you have to pass? I had to pass 18 wpm.
Spade, I see you are intending to go to the UP trappers convention. If it's in Escanaba I might try and get there. I had to edit this due to mixed up names as you can see the morse affects the brain.

1966--Fort Knox A-93(basic) Sgt. Boyd/1st. platoon. Then late 66-to Just before Christmas Fort Leonard Wood(AIT) 62E-30(Finish Grader). Then became 62E20(operate anything with an engine in Engineers) in Nam.
Jeep to 10 ton tractor trailer(anything rubber tire), Cat D7 & HD16 dozers, earth mover(290M Michigan), front end loader and anything else needed to get earth moved. That's why in my unit 46th. Engineers D-Company, my platoon was called the EM platoon.

Seems you don't forget those details. Like my US number.

1981 Lackland AFB, TX, Sgt Chase, female TI. She would get so mad at us and yell to the point she lost her voice, which would make her even more ticked off. Too funny!! Went to Military Police Investigation School down in Fort McClellan, AL. Great course, the Crime Scene test was 6 to 7 hours long depending on how long you took to process your crime scene room. Then it took a week to grade all the packages to find out if you failed any of the steps.
I was born in an Air Force Hospital, Richards-Gebaur AFB, MO, and have worked for the Air Force my entire life since I was 17. 58 now and still working for the Air Force. Been a heck of a ride, I'm now a GS-13. Not bad for a High School dropout.

Spade,
Merhaba, I was at det 27 Manzarali from My 66 to around the fall of 67 and then when Manzarali (Ankara) closed I went to Det 4-4 Karamursel til Se68. Last duty station before ETS was Two Rock Ranch Station Petaluma, Ca which was turned into a Coast Guard station and still operating as far as I know.

My oldest son was born at Incirlik Air Base, just outside of Adana. We had to visit a number of sites, like Erhac, Diyarbarkir, Izmir and a couple I don't recall the names of. I got there right after the invasion of Cypress, and it was a rather tense time.

Keep your DD-214. . I contacted the Air Force a few years ago and was told they had no record of me or the time period I served; said all records were destroyed in a fire. Without a copy of my DD-214 I would probably have lost all VA benefits.

Yep big fire in St Louis back in the 70s if memory serves. It was where all military archived 201 files were stored. It's why I was told to not only keep my personal copy but to file a copy with my county court so there would be at least two other copies. But that was pre internet.

Just another sign of the times.

My grandfather fought with the Brits in the South Pacific. He saw and did things that troubled him for his entire life. When I got home from basic training I had a rare one-on-one conversation with him in which he told me about some of it, "soldier to soldier". My grandmother was in the other room and overheard, and she told me that in over 50 years of marriage she never heard him talk about that stuff. Not long before he died at age 82, he had some skin cancer removed. When he was under anesthesia, the nurses said he was screaming about the war. He probably should have been treated for PTSD but never was, yet he came home from the war and busted his arse and raised seven kids on one income.

I know plenty of modern vets who could make something of themselves but instead milk the system and play the victim card.

Ft Jackson SC 1971 on top of tank hill. Drill Instructor was Staff Sgt Loyd Bagby Jr. Hes was small in stature, big in voice, and commanded respect. He was said to have multiple purple hearts from 4 tours in Vietnam. He treated us all the same and molded us the best he could and I wish I could thank him for teaching me the discipline I so badly needed. He helped make me the man I am today.
