Whats the best way to make a flat set

I just get the book and ill prob set pan 10 inches from flat set that should be a good distance shouldnt it

Make a mound set then drive your truck over it.

Seriously, watch your dog to see how many things he pauses to sniff. Then figure a way to guide (inconspicuously if targeting K9's) a paw to a trap pan near it.

I had that helpful book in my collection before I sold all my books.

There's been some sound advise given here especially about getting Mr Dobbins book, ill give you a little more if you're really wanting advise. Look up Ed Schneider on YouTube, he has 2 sets he catches most of his coyotes in. Master those TWO sets or a similar dirthole set and one basic flat set. Once you've caught 30 or so coyotes then start learning other sets if you think you need too. Two many chase different lures and sets thinking thats the problem and never learn how to catch coyotes. You make some comments and ask some questions that kind make me wonder if your really wanting to learn or not. Keep it as simple as you can tell you have caught 50 coyotes or fox. There's a lot of advice on here and a lot of the opinions differ so you are going to have to learn from the animals probably more than you will us on here or other sources of information. Takes years to get good as a trapper so put in your time in woods, be patient and have fun.

Im willing to learn and i work ahard and have no problem with waiting on my set sto produce so ill try my best in the woods to learn how animals act in my area thanks

Snow or sand can be a great teacher. Have a dog about coyote size? Set out some scents he don't know are there and watch where puts his feet.

Dirt hole sets are probably best for red fox. As long as we are talking about traps (not snares), as I understand it, flat sets take more coyote than all other sets combined.

Not in Ks for sure. Seems the more coyotes they catch the more they really on just dirt holes. In fact it would seem the opposite to me , dirtholes account for more coyotes than all other sides combined. But thats just based off what I've seen and heard.

I know how to make a dirt hole but a lot of places i trapare clay muddy wet areas and my dirtholes just fill with water so im gonna start trying flat sets in those areas

The whole pan distance thing is funny...as if the animals all approach from one direction.

Lip bro word of advice , take that whole A+B=C best way to do something mentality and chuck it. Theirs really no best way to do anything in trapping. Gotta look at the ground and the critter and work off that. with flat sets best advice I was given is to make sure your trap is down wind because withat a visual that general how their going to approach

Also go to the Walmart and get you a couple of those little $25 tasco trail cams and run them on your sets . It will open your eyes
