Considering building a 300 Blackout. Any reason I should or shouldn't?

I have an AR and a bolt gun in aac. Awesome little guns. Been using them suppressed in the orchards for deer with the young hunters. Been a great tool.

Great rifle! I like the Hornady 190 Sub-X bullets for suppressed night hunting. Real quiet and stones them at 100 yards and is fur friendly. It shoots 110 grain super sonic real well too. Uses regular 5.56 magazines and you can make your own brass out of 5.56 if you have too.

for what use becomes the question

Unless you are going to suppress it and shoot sub sonic rounds I dont know why anybody would want one.

If you do that you have a great close range quiet game taker

Makes sense for suppressor use but I can't help but view it as a limited round. Unless I'm missing something.

Leftlane beat me to it.

Well, MN does have a shotgun/pistol/muzzleloader area for deer. I can build the 300 on a pistol AR platform and use during that season. I also like to tinker and happened upon another AR lower today at a reasonable price. laugh

Quiet and packs enough wallop to take down the largest of hogs at shorter distances. I really enjoy mine, but unless you are building one to run with a suppressor, then I really don't see the need. Not everyone stocks it either, so it can be difficult and expensive to find ammo in times like these.

I'm going to build one this summer to use with my can. It'll be a blast.

Agree on all counts.

I have a couple and shoot hogs with them suppressed and subsonic. It's basically the same ballistics as a pistol round when subsonic. Aim for the ear.

I built mine as a pistol because of an ordinance in the township , the state is rifle all over but they allowed townships to restrict to pistol and shotgun only. I don't live in the township I hunted in or I would have run for town board and worked to make it rifle.

the right ammo for deer is not as easy to find as it should be.

in 2015 it looked good , in 2021 there are a bunch of other options that would hit a deer harder and fit in an AR

if you can hunt with 22cal in MN and you already have a 223/5.56 barrel a premium bullet in 223/5.56 may do just as well if not better than some of the bullets I have tried in 300blackout.

the AR pistol is nice , that I would do again , not as sure about the blackout , I might rebarrel my 300 in 350 legend and run the 170gr bullets , I like 2 holes. before I do that I need to play with 125 , 130 and maybe even some 150gr bullets. in 300 first.

if you read reviews on bullets you will find a bunch of people struggling to find the "right" bullet for deer from the 300bo if you want to spend less than 70cents a bullet it seems hard to do.

If your serious about subsonic 458 socom LEHIGH 570 gr bullets extended your range significantly but it will take custom bolt gun to shot them. To me sub blackouts are 100 at most for maybe smaller deer or less. Doesn't seem ethnical to punch a hole through an animal to bleed out instead of producing the hydro shock need to ethnicaly put down an animal unless your head shots only.

Wow, that's more than I was expecting. I have heard a lot of locals using them for youth hunting for the minimal recoil and good results, but they were all talking <100 yards.
