I'd take a dozen traps get good at running them and work offa that.

The 42 was taken from The Hitchikers guide to the galaxy as always being the right number. Just for the sake of completion. Mice worked that answer out but forgot what the question was.

if I'm cold rolling a ground with good sign I go in heavy and set lots of traps. After a week or 10 days I'll leave the ones that produced the best, and pull the rest and roll into new area.
Once you learn your trapground you will be able to make less sets right off, since you know which spots produced well the previous run.

Your young and full of P +V - set all the traps you own-they wont catch nothin hanging in the woodshed.
And set for all species-no use going over the same ground twice.

Im from WV too and Jerry and I have trapped all over the state.
I do not want to discourage you but I don't want you to set be upset if you don't catch what you think.

Cut over woods are better for what you want than mature woods.

I wish you.luck. just don't be discouraged if ypur catch doesn't meet your expectation

Too many sets in an area indicates too much human activity for easily spoked animals such as coyote.

Im never discouraged i only think of the oppurtunities i still have and i know i have alot to learn and im really passionate about trapping its the only thing that i love doing so hopefully i can learn to trap better and i also think cut forests have more game than mature woods because thats where they hunt and they use valleys as travel corridoors and theres alot of swamp pine growth streams in my area i trap and i know for sure there is mink muskrats beaver bobcat fox coyote and im not sure if there is otter there but i assume theres got to be atleast one or 2 there but i mever seen an otter toilet there but i think i saw an otter track in the mud one time hoe do i find out if there there or not could i just set pocket sets with otter lure fish oil and some fish based mink and coon bait would that get me an otter

I know for a fact theres other people that trap there and dont know how o make a dirthole cause there hole is about 5 inches deep and about 4 inches wide i try to make narrow dirtholes about 12 inches deep but coyotes have seen many dirtholes so i might have to start using flat sets there instead

For otter Make a drowning set like you would for beaver and use Backbreaker or salmon oil and if they're there you should catch one.

Remember they have a huge home range so patient is the key..it may take better than a month.

You can catch them.in pocket sets also.if you choose to use a pocket set bait it with salmon oil.make sure you stake the trap down good or tie it off good because otters fight like (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). They roll alot when caught

If you have a neckdown spot (narrower channel) in the creek or swamp you can try a 330..you may have to fence it in to get it necked down enough.

Just because theres no otter sign doesn't mean they aren't there.

Good luck. Let me know what happens.

100-400 acres is a big, big difference, either way I would follow the 2 traps per acre rule and set that place up like a minefield.
Good luck

There are definitely otter in your area.

We did a beaver job on sand run up past glen Daniel amd we caught an otter there. I believe it was mattsville rd.

Jerry traps alot of otter in other states and they don't make toilets like they do in other states.

When ya get a little snow go look for tracks. They move ike crazy when the snows on like mink.

Put some castor at the top of slide and set a foothold.set on drowner if you can not set a drowner set make sure you tie it. Off good or stake it really good

What you're describing ia perfect habitat for otter

The otter will use the abandoned beaver lodges for shelter and for raising young.

If you can ffind. The main channel and set a 330 you will catch everything there.

Do not catch all your beaver or you'll destroy the habitat for everything.

I wouldn't take more than 2 out of the colony(in wv) or you'll be shooting yourself in the foot for next year.
