I'd like to get a chronograph for checking velocity on my handloads. I've seen some that are very nice but are expensive and have more bells and whistles than I will ever use.
I need one that will reliably record and display velocity... I dont need Bluetooth, satellite linkup, cupholders, heated seats, and all that nonsense... Just bare bones accuracy and reliability.

If you get a chronograph that you shoot over make sure you get the cheapest working one you can find. You’ll end up shooting the dang thing before too long. If you want one you won’t shoot check out the labradar. It’s a Doppler radar that sets on your shooting bench(or tripod beside you) and it can give you al sorts of data. They are avet expensive though but you shouldn’t shoot it like a shooting chrony

I bought a barrel mounted chronograph that works great

the lab radar is great if you have a friend with money to by one and let you shoot over it once in a while
I have been looking at the magneto speed myself just haven't done it yet

I have a Chrony that I have been using for about 20 years and have never shot it. They run just over $100. I did have to replace a screen because they got a bit brittle and one cracked, not because I shot it.
A remote readout and controls to change strings would be nice, especially when there are others shooting at the same time. I think the new ones all come with that capability.
I would not want a chronograph that is barrel mounted due to the change in impact and potentially in accuracy. When you shoot test loads over a chronograph you can get both statistical data and group data and can compare them against each other. With the barrel mounted models you lose the ability to get meaningful group data to compare. This^^^ was one of my issues with the barrel mounted models... I don't like hanging extra stuff off of my barrel and messing with my groups/POI. Mike

C'mon, that's called barrel tuning. Yeah, if I leave it on there. Mike

It depends on the goal , if your wanting to easily ladder test while others are at the range , the barrel mounted one would get you the ladder test find the smallest SD then run those for accuracy separate
if your wanting a more advanced that you intend to shoot over a lot while also going for group size on target at long range something more like the lab radar
it is all about your situation , if your at a club range that is busy keeping it behind the line is good
most of the time when shooting for velocity your not shooting for score also , but some people do want to do both
if your wanting info for long range ballistics having that velocity drop at different distances will let you more fine tune your exact G7 ballistic coefficient as I understand it I don't get that detailed in the numbers

Mike I like the magnetospeed the best, I've had a chony for a long time, went to the mag and it is way better and more dependable, and I shoot to get my SD and ES before I even worry about groups, I'd rather have those 2 figured out before groups, then when I find a good load I look to see how it groups, and usually when this is done, the load also groups well too.

I have the Lab Radar. Best money I spent. No issues with getting readings and no strapping things to my gun.
