Know nothing about cattle but that looks like some kind of tough highland breed from Scotland maybe originally. Just a guess. What is it?

Crosspatch, they are scottish highlanders, they are pretty tough, one of the oldest cattle breds in america.

Marathon, we sell all we can produce , we are getting repeat customers, we are expanding our heard this year, 20 head with five more ladies to freshen. The beef is lean but still tender and juicy, like a cross between venison and beef.

are they grass fed rather than finished on corn?

Danny, our beef is strickly grass fed , most farmers don't like the fact that they grow slow, takes us 30- 36 months, grain fed different breds 18 months.

I have a rather "interesting" organic farmer friend of mine who runs a couple dozen Scottish highlanders for a friend. Its sort of odd seeing cattle, both sexes, with horns. Almost a thing entirely of the past with modern cattle. I don't see where they make any money in the deal because the calves don't seem to get sold off as group, and my friend has to pay his "hired man"---another "unique" individual who lives in an off-grid cabin made out of the remains of an old farm house on the property--all winter long to help tend the cattle and occasionally help load a grain truck. But, if it works for all 3 of them, so be it. Interesting critters to look at when I'm up there.

Super pics.
Awesome that the calves can handle that kind of cold.
Very cool indeed.

All horned cattle have horns on both sexes. Only in some antlered species do only the male grow head gear.

Love them Scotties! Tough buggers that don't require much other than good water, grass and a very good fence. When there calm they are reall sweethearts but they can be stubborn when they want to be. My brother has been raising them for almost 20 years now and never has problems finding a market for them. Sells the meat on the organic market, sells the tanned hides as well as the cleaned skulls. Some of the best eating beef you can wrap your lips around!

No, my friend makes money farming. Then again, he's 72, worked 20 years at another job where he may have some sort of retirement funds still in play, and farms his family's homestead farm. He makes his money on his organic crops; soybeans, corn, alfalfa, and barley/oats. The first 5 years I knew hin, he didn't plant corn, mostly alfalfa and soybeans, with a field of barley he cut as hay. Went majority corn last year and cut out most of his hay. The guy doesn't own any equipment newer than the early 1980s. I wouldn't live in his house but that's his choice. The cattle deal is that he has about 20+ acres of pasture and wasn't using it so now he takes care of these Scottish highlanders. Maybe he gets beef out of the deal, don't know.

I haven't trapped his direct homestead in a couple of years, but its "interesting" coon trapping, some pics below. The "machine shed' is sort of having to watch where you step and I don't think the wagon has moved since I meet him in 2013. Good spot though. We might have to "bounty" trap some coon out of homestead come April. The price for a tail may be higher than finished coon averages this year. I'll let you know...

I've. got a farm just like that! Must be easy for coons and possums to find. a meal there. Coon trails come frome miles around, but can't use conis. because he has cats. A common problem around here! I trap it every two years!

Yeah, I don't use conis there either, DP's or live cages. After the first year or two, he saw a decrease in his cat food bill and fewer beat up felines. He thinks grinners are "good rat-ers" so doesn't like me taking them, although some don't quite get away...
