I've been using a single squirt of starting fluid in the air cleaner vent. But my nephew pulled the air cleaner to spritz the filter with a little diesel .

He said the starting fluid was bad....

Can diesel fuel be thinned with something safe to spray out of a bottle ???

ether has no lubricant. WD40 fixes that problem. Little higher flash point than diesel but much easier to handle

Don't start a diesel with starting fluid to prime the pump. I've seen this done when a tractor ran out of gas. Without diesel in the injection pump, the pump can be damaged with no lubricant. I don't think the damage is from the starter fluid. The damage is from running the pump without any lubricant. Bleed the pump.

But, if the tank hasn't run dry and the pump has diesel in it, I don't see how a shot of starter fluid would do any harm. My dad just sold a 1954 Oliver that was started with a shot of starter fluid for 50 years that I can confirm.

I had to use WD-40 in a hot rod modified jet ski back in the day because it had no choke. It would have blown up with starting fluid. WD-40 is a great starting fluid for stuff.

This is good advice if you run out of fuel bleed the system, and a wiff of ether wont hurt a think on older diesels, never use enough to cause an ether lock or a knock when it starts. Also make sure you don't have glow plugs or an intake heater before using a starting aid. Some of the tiers of fuel efficient diesels will not give extra fuel in cold weather and are very easy to either lock.
