I am going to piggy back off the battery thread. What type of battery charger would you recommend. Looking for one to cover all ranges of batteries. From atv to tractors skid steers, etc.

I'll have to look at the one I have but it s digital. Analyses the battery, you can do lead and lithium batteries, gas a maintenance mode. If needed, can be ran off a cigarette plug.

I have 2 favorite battery chargers for different reasons. One has a boost mode so strong it will spin an old diesel w/ poor compressor in the cold until it puffs and finally starts. I've used it to start semis, tractors, and heavy equipment.

The other is a trickle charger that I will leave on a battery or set of batteries overnight and I think the dam thing is as old as I am. It only has 2 modes: 12v or 6 and you have to unplug it to shut it off.

I'll neve buy another Schumacher battery charger no matter what. Five pieces of junk in a row.

I warned my son about them but he bought one anyway because it was on sale at Walmart. First one lasted about a month so he took it back and traded it for another. Second one lasted about a month too.

Unless your tools all say Snap On you cannot compare anything modern to what was made 20, 30, or even more years ago. That has been my generalized experience anyway

I'd take a 20-year old one over a dozen of the new ones!

One thing I find annoying with these new 'smart' chargers , is it analyses your battery before it charges it.

If you have a totally 'flat' (completely discharged) battery it will reject the battery and not charge it. The charger thinks there is a fault with your battery or you have it hooked up wrong. The charger shuts off automatically.
This leaves you with either using a trickle charger for hours to get the voltage up to say , 2 volts so the smart charger recognizes it as a weak battery and will now accept it to be charged or jump-starting the battery with another battery to transfer some voltage into it so the charger will accept it. Manufacturer's need to have a override so you can at least charge it at the lowest setting like 2amp to get something into the battery so the smart charger will accept it. I'm glad I still have an old 'dumb' charger that I can use to bring a flat battery up to the point when a smart charger will be able to accept it.

I'm sure everyone already knows this, but I'll post it anyway. Always hook up the + cable first, then the -. When taking them off, disconnect the - first then the +.

Also , and most importantly , connect the final - to ground , not to the battery terminal. I've had a battery blow up on me before I learned better. That last connection causes a spark , hydrogen burns with a colorless flame. Luckily i backed away before the top of the battery blew up and I didn't get hurt.

A friend of mine hooked up jumper cables while leaning over the battery. It blew up and shot acid into his eyes. He groped the 20ft sidewalk to his front door because he could not see. Groped his way into the house to the kitchen sink and flushed his eyes out. He came out OK but learned a very valuable lesson.

I feel bad it is about 30 miles away tonight because Shane (best neighbor a man ever had) is feeding round hay to about 600 head of momma cows and pairs and his pops the breaker and mine doesn't for some reason. You should also know his old old tractor is what he keeps out there and startin it when it gets below 30 is a chore.

I got it at Napa and it wasn't even expensive but this was around 15 years ago. It prolly says Napa but I imagine it was made by someone else who put their stickers on it for them
