I am getting to the end of my trapping budget, and I know it is not ideal to buy cheap traps, but I would like suggestions.my state requires offset/rubber between 5-6 inches and nothing above 6 inches.
thanks as always!

I've caught plenty in both Bridger and Duke #2s. Neither are terribly expensive and should fall within your parameters.

thanks as always! Does that mean you can use either offsets or rubber jaws? If you can use offsets I would buy #2 Duke offsets. They are 4 coiled and are a well built trap that won't cost you a arm and a leg. And you can also get them In the dog-less type

I caught a lot of coyotes in 1.5 Victor, Montgomery RJ and Duke traps way back before I found trapperman and found out they won't work on coyotes. I believe Leggett's caught 600+ in a season in Victor 1.75 (same trap as a Duke 1.75). I can't recall the exact number its been many years since I watched their video on it. (Great video BTW if you're an aspiring coyote trapper.)
To answer your question with your regulations, the Duke 1 3/4 with offset jaws is the best choice for cheap coyote trap. If he is allowed a trap with a 6” jaw spread, why do you feel a trap with a 5 1/4” jaw spread is his best choice for a cheap trap?

You go bigger and they cost more. Proper set making and guiding should get you the same results with these as any #2 trap. The pan they need to step on is the same size.

To answer your question with your regulations, the Duke 1 3/4 with offset jaws is the best choice for cheap coyote trap. I'm still using 1.75 Victors and still catching plenty of coyotes in them. I guess I don't read well. Another tip is you can buy used 1.75's pretty reasonable from those who have found out they won't work on coyotes. Slap a couple of #2 music wire springs on them and you've got a nice little trap.

To answer your question with your regulations, the Duke 1 3/4 with offset jaws is the best choice for cheap coyote trap. would you do any mods that didn't require welding? Wouldn't hurt. You could add a mid-chain swivel, bend the jaw tips up a little so they are less likely to pull back through the frame, file the pan and dog so it fires like you like (maybe a nightlatch), you could upgrade the chain, swivels, and J-hooks (I would use the stock chains myself.) Really very little needs done to them they are suitable right of the box to hold coyotes. They will hold any they get a good grip on.

If $$$ was the driving force, I would have to go with a Duke #2 DC OS. 5.88" jaw spread, 4coiled, @~$105/doz. (new)
For me personally, price isn't the sole driver. I look for trap size, usability out of the box, swiveling and wanting a dogless design w/ great pan tension adjustment .... waiting for a look at the MB dogless.

Don't over look the bridger 1.75. Very inexpensive, base plated, thicker rounded edge square jaws and steel generally thicker than dukes. You also get two good thick swivels and welded chain on them stock, not twist link. I have caught a lot of coyotes in these and price is right there to duke 175s but a much better built trap. I have a few dozen of these and they are a great trap for the $8 a piece price range. There is also very little difference between a duke 2 round jaw and a duke 1.75 round jaw, except for price and different number on the pan. I have a bunch of these too but I use them in high traffic and possible theft areas. Dukes have a place on my line but please know I rebend and retune my dukes often after coyote catches and in these higher risk locations i don't get upset as much over a stolen or damaged one. My bridgers get set in better locations. I will say though the newer square jaw dukes look like a vast improvement over their round jaw 2s and 1.75s. Jim Coyote in bridger 1.75. Even in slippery mud it wasn't going anywhere.

I bought for $105/dz also. Only recommendation is you might want to upgrade chain/swivels.

Do you really think a coyote Is going to break that chain or compromise that swivel? I've caught lots of coyotes In the Duke dog on # 2 and never had any problems with those parts.

I'd still pick the Dukes 1.75 over both. That's why there are lots of trap choices, everyone likes something different in their traps.

Big believer in quality coyote traps, since there’s a ton of wolves where I do a lot of my trapping. There's a ton X 2 up here in Northern MN and my 1.75 victors hold plenty of them. I really don't mind when they blow one up as it saves me a lot of hassle.

I caught and promptly lost my first coyote in a NW 1 3/4 that had #2 music wire springs. It was a painful but informative catch. I could see the yote from the road. It had snowed the night before. I drove out to it, loaded my revolver with just 3 .22 long rifle rounds and walked towards the unagitated animal. When I got within about 20 ft it got agitated, circled the stakes a couple times, and then I heard a “ping” and realized it had pulled the jaws right out of the frame.
Three shots later, I looked at the destroyed trap and realized why people laminated the jaws and added baseplates.
Without a welder I bent, drilled and pop-riveted 1/8-inch strips on top of the jaws. Added a similar strip as a base plate. Those reinforced traps caught several coyotes. Looking back, I had 2-3 hours in each trap. I could have bought well built traps, actually designed for coyotes, and saved myself a lot of time just buying what I should have gotten over time, instead of thinking I had to buy them in dozen lots. BUT this is how lessons are learned.
Never too old to learn
