I am getting to the end of my trapping budget, and I know it is not ideal to buy cheap traps, but I would like suggestions.my state requires offset/rubber between 5-6 inches and nothing above 6 inches.

thanks as always!

I've caught plenty in both Bridger and Duke #2s. Neither are terribly expensive and should fall within your parameters.

Does that mean you can use either offsets or rubber jaws? If you can use offsets I would buy #2 Duke offsets.
They are 4 coiled and are a well built trap that won't cost you a arm and a leg. And you can also get them In the dog-less type

Trap shed and conventions are your friend. If you need to buy new look at duke or wolf creek.

I caught a lot of coyotes in 1.5 Victor, Montgomery RJ and Duke traps way back before I found trapperman and found out they won't work on coyotes. I believe Leggett's caught 600+ in a season in Victor 1.75 (same trap as a Duke 1.75). I can't recall the exact number its been many years since I watched their video on it. (Great video BTW if you're an aspiring coyote trapper.)

To answer your question with your regulations, the Duke 1 3/4 with offset jaws is the best choice for cheap coyote trap.

If he is allowed a trap with a 6” jaw spread, why do you feel a trap with a 5 1/4” jaw spread is his best choice for a cheap trap?

I have caught coyotes in number 2 Duke coils. A trap I use in higher human traffic areas.

Because they are cheaper and plenty sufficient to hold coyotes. You go bigger and they cost more. Proper set making and guiding should get you the same results with these as any #2 trap. The pan they need to step on is the same size.

I'm still using 1.75 Victors and still catching plenty of coyotes in them. I guess I don't read well. Another tip is you can buy used 1.75's pretty reasonable from those who have found out they won't work on coyotes. Slap a couple of #2 music wire springs on them and you've got a nice little trap.

Not that I have caught as many as some on here but everyone I have caught has been in a 1 3/4 Duke. First started with close jaws now all are offset. My pan tension is on the heavy side but that has gotten me deep pad catches, I would suggest base plating them.

I have always used and been an advocate of smaller traps and I use in line shock absorbers, swivels and off set jaws and center swivels to compensate for the smaller and not as strong of a trap. The traps are 1.75 Victors with two springs.
If I were starting over and younger and had very limited funds I would probably buy used traps to start and the money I save per trap being used I would buy a slightly bigger trap then I use now, say 2s or 3s. Mine are all coil springs but you could buy some long springs. You over time will learn which ones work the best for you.

If you were just looking for a small trap and not cheap the MB 450 can and do hold coyotes.

Bryce

Wouldn't hurt. You could add a mid-chain swivel, bend the jaw tips up a little so they are less likely to pull back through the frame, file the pan and dog so it fires like you like (maybe a nightlatch), you could upgrade the chain, swivels, and J-hooks (I would use the stock chains myself.) Really very little needs done to them they are suitable right of the box to hold coyotes. They will hold any they get a good grip on.

If $$$ was the driving force, I would have to go with a Duke #2 DC OS. 5.88" jaw spread, 4coiled, @~$105/doz. (new)

For me personally, price isn't the sole driver. I look for trap size, usability out of the box, swiveling and wanting a dogless design w/ great pan tension adjustment .... waiting for a look at the MB dogless.

Good to know Scott. Seems like a small jaw spread for a #3 coil.

Caught a lot of coyotes in the Sleepy Creek 1.75. Good solid trap but not sure if they make them anymore.

Don't over look the bridger 1.75. Very inexpensive, base plated, thicker rounded edge square jaws and steel generally thicker than dukes. You also get two good thick swivels and welded chain on them stock, not twist link.
I have caught a lot of coyotes in these and price is right there to duke 175s but a much better built trap. I have a few dozen of these and they are a great trap for the $8 a piece price range.
There is also very little difference between a duke 2 round jaw and a duke 1.75 round jaw, except for price and different number on the pan. I have a bunch of these too but I use them in high traffic and possible theft areas. Dukes have a place on my line but please know I rebend and retune my dukes often after coyote catches and in these higher risk locations i don't get upset as much over a stolen or damaged one. My bridgers get set in better locations.
I will say though the newer square jaw dukes look like a vast improvement over their round jaw 2s and 1.75s.
Jim

Coyote in bridger 1.75. Even in slippery mud it wasn't going anywhere.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

What about the duke #2 dogless? That’s about 10-11$ per trap and 4 coiled. The bridger 1.75 is good too though, I have to adjust tweak after coyote catches and sometimes need to remove trap and take home to fix.

I too live in Arkansas. I bought a new dz Duke SJ #2 offset 4 coil traps for 85.00 a dz. I bought them at nta. Alot of people uses Duke 1 3/4 traps. I bought 6 at a yard sale for 20.00. Only one had been used. I 4 coil them. They were regular jaw. So I welded a bead on inside of jaws offset now. I run 3 dz Duke #3 offset 4 coil on public land. I have caught alot of fur in them.

Yes, the new Duke #2 dogless. I bought for $105/dz also. Only recommendation is you might want to upgrade chain/swivels.

Do you really think a coyote Is going to break that chain or compromise that swivel? I've caught lots of coyotes In the Duke dog on # 2 and never had any problems with those parts.

Coyote in bridger 1.75. Even in slippery mud it wasn't going anywhere.

Good catch! No doubt they will work, but I actually prefer the Bridger 1.65 to the 1.75 for its larger jaw spread and conventional pan set up. I'd still pick the Dukes 1.75 over both. That's why there are lots of trap choices, everyone likes something different in their traps.

If I could offer only one word of advice on this question it would be : don't !
A coyote is the ultimate trap tester and a cheap trap . . .or a 'small , cheap trap' , would be even worst !
Quality only hurts once and it cost to get an education also come to mine.
Come by a see me and I'll make sure you leave with a few GREAT coyote traps.
Otherwise, your friends are warning you to reconsider.

Big believer in quality coyote traps, since there’s a ton of wolves where I do a lot of my trapping.

You're in Flint Michigan (where i was born and raised). Where are you trapping? I'm guessing the U.P or out of state?

There's a ton X 2 up here in Northern MN and my 1.75 victors hold plenty of them. I really don't mind when they blow one up as it saves me a lot of hassle.

I caught and promptly lost my first coyote in a NW 1 3/4 that had #2 music wire springs. It was a painful but informative catch. I could see the yote from the road. It had snowed the night before. I drove out to it, loaded my revolver with just 3 .22 long rifle rounds and walked towards the unagitated animal. When I got within about 20 ft it got agitated, circled the stakes a couple times, and then I heard a “ping” and realized it had pulled the jaws right out of the frame.

Three shots later, I looked at the destroyed trap and realized why people laminated the jaws and added baseplates.

Without a welder I bent, drilled and pop-riveted 1/8-inch strips on top of the jaws. Added a similar strip as a base plate. Those reinforced traps caught several coyotes. Looking back, I had 2-3 hours in each trap. I could have bought well built traps, actually designed for coyotes, and saved myself a lot of time just buying what I should have gotten over time, instead of thinking I had to buy them in dozen lots. BUT this is how lessons are learned.

Never too old to learn

I've caught a few coyotes in the old round jaw Montgomery 1.5's
It wasn't on purpose though.
The # 2 RJ Montgomery was a pretty good trap and I 4 coiled a lot of them using JC Conner 4 coil kits.
I have to tell you though, when ever I hear a man trying to skimp on a coyote trap, I swallow hard.
In my book, that's asking for trouble, somewhere down the line. . .

I bought my 6 year old a dozen bridger 1.75. I had promised him as soon as he could set his own coyote traps that I would buy him some. The kid practiced all summer making dirtholes in the garden, setting and firing traps. He caught 3 coyotes, a bobcat, and a handful of coons. I added a midchain crunch proof swivel and super stakes. The pans are absolute garbage on those little Bridgers, they have to be re bent after almost ever catch, but other than that they have been bullet proof. Once he gets big enough to set a #3 he’ll get a dozen of those.

I highly recommend buy once cry once, work an extra weekend and boom you’ve got enough money to buy some decent traps.
