It is really simple...... on ice the BRAKES ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND. And yes it is that simple. Heard that on radio after snow and ice for 30 or so years. JD Carnahan you are missed.

Feel sorry for the victims of the crash .... A lot of things going on for sure.
But I think driving attitudes contribute significantly.
I was down in Dallas/ Ft Worth a number of years ago visiting family. It was pouring rain to the point that highways were flooding. Anyway one woman apparently had no time to wait. Drove full speed in the empty inside lanes past a string of probably 20 cars doing 10 mph all navigating the only passable lane. Yup, she drove full bore into 3+ foot deep water with a VW bug. She ended up floating against the inner median wall. She rolled down her window, climbed onto the window sill, waving her arms and yelling for someone to come and get her. Since she appeared to be uninjured, all I could do is just shake my head in disbelief at how people can be. I personally was glad I had gotten the Lincoln Navigator at the rental agency.

Brad if you ever drag a trailer thru DFW it will give you some insite. You try to leave enough room between you and the vehicle ahead of you so that you could stop with out plowing over them. Then 3 or 4 of the metro drivers jump into that space.
The do not know how to drive on ice and they tail gate one another even doin mach 1 speeds.

If the sign says 75 most folks will try to do the limit no matter what. I have been on I-90 with cars/ trucks in the ditches and clowns doing the limit like it was summer time. From the stories I hear from texas, 75 might of been the slowest car on the highway. That is the absolute truth. The speed limit is 75 and we're driving at least 85. It's kinda like Nascar drafting on most highways. With that being said, most of the drivers here drive slow as can be at the slightest indication of rain. If it is snowing or sleeting, a lot of people won't even drive because they are so afraid of it.

Texans and Georgians are hands down the worst drivers in the country. I dont believe there are more than about ten hours total, out of a year, you can loop around DFW on 35w 820,635 and 20 or 285 in Hotlanta, without seeing a wreck. Houston is unbelievable too. St Louis and suburbs deserves honorable mention

St. Louis sucks. I never did find a good time to drive through there during the day when it wasn't a madhouse... I never did try overnight hours though, 2:00 a.m. might've been the time but I never got to try it. Mike

I went through Nashville a few weeks ago. The speed limit was 55 and the traffic was moving at 75. 5 lanes, and in the center lane was a flatbed hauling a Caterpillar scraper. No way could he have stopped that rig if things went south. Atlanta was 7 lanes and somebody had made a booboo. I saw at least 3 ambulances and 5 firetrucks and the traffic was backed up for several miles. I'm sure that happens every single day in Atlanta. Hate that town. On I-90 and I-80 there are pile-ups of semis every winter. I swear at least half of the truck drivers have never seen snow let alone ice. Many drivers are Mexican or foreigners who can't speak English yet they can get a license to drive a truck. Funnest part of Nashville and Oklahoma City is watching the signs. If you don't you will look up at some point and realize you are now on the wrong interstate.

That's a fact. And I always pictured Nashville in my mind as a nice clean country music town. Not so. I spent the night on the edge of Nashville and carried a gun into the nearby convenience store for a beer run.

The do not know how to drive on ice and they tail gate one another even doin mach 1 speeds. I went through there 4-5 years ago and couldn’t believe how it had changed. I had sweat running down my face by the time I made it to Waco. I understand they have no idea how to drive on ice. I don’t understand why on a clear day and straight highway they would just keep plowing full speed into a wall of wreckage. One after the other over and over. It’s like they couldn’t see 10 yards past their hoods.

That is a big problem with inexperienced drivers from southern states when traveling in northern climates when conditions aren't favorable.

Pile ups like that are really not uncommon. I80 around San Francisco has a couple every year. Fog gets so thick you can only see about 20 feet. When that happens some folks still want to still drive 80 and some 8. Never ends well. Regular occurrence. Interstate traffic has easily tripled in the last 30 years or so nation wide. Most people are in a hurry. Weather gets bad some slow down and some dont. Sometimes you just need to park.
You yourself may have the skill to drive in whatever inclement weather your in. Many dont. When they slam into you telling everyone it wasn't your fault dont help much. Especially if your dead or injured. Need to ask yourself just how important it is to keep driving when your in a high traffic area and its raining hard, or snowing, or foggy, or icy, or a combination.
If you have to go to work leave early. Better to sit in your car sipping from a thermos and watching netflix on your phone for a couple hours, than driving in heavy traffic in bad weather.

Too many people too many problems. I can drive to ranch and back about 45 miles and most of the time I don't see one outfit and sometime one or two in the round trip.

Georgians are actually good drivers and have great roads. Atlanta on the other hand is populated by folks that are majority not native Georgians, including myself, and the roads are obsolete before they are completed due to Georgia's build as needed for current need policies.
