I know a bunch of you like that movie. If you’re like me, I rewatch it pretty often. I’ve got a question. When they are leaving lonesome dove and Gus takes the wagon back and gets the sign, it shows that cast iron hanging under the wagon specifically a few times. What’s the deal with that? Is there a significance to it, or just where they keep it? I also thought it may have something to do with the pigs but he intended to leave them, and I doubt they would use a cast iron roaster as a hog trough. Anybody know? Any guesses?

I figured there was pig food (corn) in it so the pigs would follow

Good Luck

Probably just a misguided movie prop. Should be a grease bucket for the wagon axles, which wouldn't be cast iron.

I always thought they (directors) had it filled with feed so the pigs would follow. Thought they were being sneaky with the feed.

I think that is a system to hold axle grease and a paint brush and they would grease the wheels with that regularly

Reckon you'd eat enough dust on the trail, a Dutch oven half full dirt by supper time wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. sick

I never even give it a 2nd thought (even tho it looks odd down there) because I knew the surly bartender scene was almost up

Feed so the pigs will follow wagon in The movie
In one part of the movie one of the pigs gets a bite out of the Dutch oven while the wagon is moving.
Starz has Lonesome Dove to watch for free, I watched it last week, I think.
