I'm a new member here. Greetings everyone.
Can anyone recommend some good options to use as support wire for yote/beaver snares?
I understand some are using the "Ideal Reel" 77532 14 Gauge Tie Wire, 3.5 lb. Rolls but I prefer something that is not covered with machine oil which tends to get all over everything. Yes, I understand the oil is there to prevent rust, but I'll take rust over oily mess, given the choice. If it makes a difference I live in an area that has high levels of rain, humidity, and snow depending on the season.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Boil wire and new snares in baking soda water. Gives shiny cable a dull gray colour and should remove the little bit of oil on the wire.

9 guage wire. Mostly use premade supports.

Agree with Newt.If oil or rust bothers you,you can treat your wire rolls when boiling and blackening and waxing your traps and snares. The wax will keep it from rusting for a while, but I always re inforce old wire when opening up snares for the season, especially if they have been idle at a jackpot for a couple seasons.
Wire is cheap, dont skimp and you wont lose fur.

Go down to your local farm store and look for fencing wire or bracing wire, It's galvanized and there are different gauges and different grades of stiffness. It's ten times better then that tie wire that comes In rolls.
To make 14 gauge work your going to have to twist 2 strands together to get It stiff enough otherwise In my opinion It's just 2 limp.

I find 11 ga wire to work fine for me re supporting wolf and coyote snares.

I got some from TS and it wasn't coated in oil. I've boiled and waxed rolls of wire in the past to keep my fingers a bit cleaner. I'm grimy enough as it is.

I like #11 for bobcat and coyote snares, #9 for beaver snares.
If I'm doing summer work it's thicker an more cover #9 is my favorite wire.
Thinner open country just about have to use thinnest wire you can get by with.
And still get coyotes going around.

Let me sugar coat this

X2 (annealed, not galvanized) a SOLID support is a key ingredient in snaring and you'll never get that with 14ga wire unless you can anchor it high next to the lock keeping it very short. It'll hold the snare up but you'll have more body catches and more knocked down snares in my experience.

Using annealed 9 wire for my anchor and support has made me way more efficient at setting snares. I don't like the oil either so I degrease it before boiling. You can probably just boil it but I don't like the oil in the boiling water either.

Brings up an important point, I don't boil snares ever because I don't like the look and feel of them, but if you boil oily support wire, you can/should overflow the pot before removing the wire so when the oil floats to the top you're not lifting the wire through it and re-coating them, it runs off with the extra water.

I double 14ga wire for snareing cats and fox.I use it as both a support and as a tie off.
Single 11 ga is fine as a support and tie off for fox and cats.
I'm talking about lethal set snares.
I wont use wire to tie off live holding devices nor when snaring large animals like wolves.
I often use doubled 11 ga wire to support larger heavier wolf snares with kill springs and a whammy, but always cable the snare off with an extension cable.

11ga is what I use. But I’m no expert, just a dumb fox trapper.

I’ve had no issue with using wire fresh out of the box from the trapping supplier.

Use it on fox, coon, beaver... or whatever I set cable for

SniperB, I'm interested premade supports. What do you feel are their main advantages over plain wire? Any in particular you can recommend? Thanks in advance!

A stick is a pain at best. You can never get it to set where and how you want it. How do you hold the stick up? Wire you can rise and lower and change the pitch of the snare so it hangs how you want it too.

Unfortunately my only option is going to be purchasing online. What gauge do you particularly like? Thanks in advance!

I weld #9 wire to 14” sections of sharpened rebar supports. I want my supports very solid and my wire stiff. I use poly support collars on my coyote trail snares. The only thing that moves when a coyote starts in the snare is the lock. I do degrease my supports. Works for me
