Loading up some mags for range time tomorrow.
Started loading some win 556 fmj and noticed a big dimple/ crease looked through the box found 2 more with smaller dimple(s) just below the neck.
Moved on to federal American Eagle 223 fmj one box had 4 with dimples in same area but one had a dimple/ crease on the neck. A different box had 2
Aquila 223 fmj had 5

Question is this common from mass production and is it safe or send back to manufacturers? Obviously the ones with a deep dimple/ crease I won't shoot.

I really don't want to go through every brand and box tonight lol

Well that's ugly. I would send them back and maybe get some free ammo. However, if there quality control is that bad, do you really want free ammo from them?

Finster I agree. I've never seen this many with dimples and from various manufacturers. I bought all of these at ther end of 2019 early 2020

I have rem core lok for my 9.3x62 and they all have those marks, in every box all 20 rounds have it. All I know is the animals don't know the difference when they get hit. I would say if your just plinking it doesn't matter. If your trying to shoot one hole groups at 1000 yards it might be a problem. But then you wouldnt be doing that with 55grn bullets either.

I agree, I don't think it's unsafe to shoot. It's just really bad quality control.

Definitely bad QC and should be reported or even exchanged for better. As long as they chamber and headspace correctly those dents will pop out and fire form just fine assumed there aren't other QC issues like a squib or double charged load. The whole QC thing would have me wondering so I'd just send them back.

Wow! I've seen some bad reloads like that but never in factory stuff.

Those dimple will be gone just after ya pull the trigger, Yes they are safe to shoot. And they'll be ok for plinking at the range or tipping over a song dog if ya don't reach out to far with them.

Looks like a little too much lube was used when going through the sizer die at the factory. I've made that mistake before when reloading. Info above is correct, they are ok to shoot.

They are fine.
If your an employee of Federal you can buy those in the company store labeled as visual defects at a great price.
I suspect with the current shortages the inspectors are letting those go out to retail whereas in the past they would not for the exact reason of this thread, bad press.
I will mention tho that in 50 years of shooting countless rounds I’ve found Winchester to have the poorest quality control. Their 17 WSM rounds are really bad.

Adam I'd go ahead and shoot them as well . Back when I'd buy unprimed brass I'd find 1 or 2 pieces with split necks from Winchester availability was limited then It's worse now .

You could call their customer service and ask them for a suggestion as to how to fix this problem .

Shoot em. They'll pop out. They have been running balls to the wall for so long the qc inspectors r burnt out by now!!!

I make the ones on the shoulder while reloading (to much resizing lube) and just reloaded and shot them. U won't be able to tell there was a dimple there.

My 2 cents. The Winchester ammo looks like excess resizing lube dents.

And the Federal ammo looks like dirt on brass forming die.

Remington looks like rough handling marks.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the info.
The first picture of federal has 2 with creases on the neck (hard to see in the pics) and is the dirtiest for sure.
I'll send the manufacturer's an email about these & their qc to see what they say. These were all bought pre shortage (end of 2019- early 2020). The federals were bought a few days before the original 2 week shutdown. I highly doubt they will send replacement since they are so far behind.

Range day got canceled. Woke up to a couple inches of snow temps at 1° before the windchill. We're in a blizzard warning until 1100 with gusts of 55mph and expecting upto 7".
