Iíve been reading quite a few books in the dark and cold months. Are there any must read trapline stories, exploration or survival type things that people would be willing to recommend?

Two books I've enjoyed reading, and rereading, over the years are Alaska's Wolf Man, about trapper/hunter Frank Glaser, and Shadows on the Koyukuk, autobiography of Sidney Huntington. Both are nonfiction. When the weather is bitterest cold, I enjoy rereading Robert Service's Cremation of Sam McGee and Jack London's To Build a Fire, both shorter fiction works.

Osbourne russells journal. I don't remember the title, but if you Google it I'm sure you can find it. It's the best mountain man book I've read.

Endurance by Alfred Lansing. Subtitled Shakleton's Incredible Voyage. It was published in 1959 and is long out of print but can be found at online bookstore such as ABE Books where I buy almost all my books. I got a first edition in good condition there for less than $10.00 including shipping.

It's a non-fiction about the Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1915 and describes the incredible hardships and adversities endured by the expedition members.

It was recommended to me by a Tman member, I think it was White17 but not certain. I wasn't disappointed and don't think you will be either.

Eh...wot?

Arctic Daughter: A Wilderness Journey, by Jean Aspen is a good one. It follows the journey of a woman and her future husband from Arizona into the Brooks Range of Alaska She uses her mothers journal and notes and follows in the footsteps of her parents that were also Alaskan Adventurers.

Marlin fishing is intrinsically, almost compulsorily, a team sport, one that requires a boat captain, mate, and fishing crew for the 16 million deep-sea anglers in America. But Carlos Bentos has won dozens of billfish competitions-working completely alone. In fair weather and foul, he single-handedly maneuvers his boat for twelve, fourteen, sixteen hours a day, days at a stretch, at the same time spotting, landing, and releasing unharmed marlin weighing hundreds of pounds.

How does he do it? And why? In A Crew of One, Bentos describes what compels him to troll solo a hundred miles offshore hoping for the strike of the fish called "the apex of deep-sea fishing." Through one man's extraordinary experiences of solitary adventuring, this oceanic A River Runs Through It offers a new way of looking at fishing, at self-reliance, and at the mystique of being alone at sea.
