Bacon has gotten a bit expensive lately so we don’t do it often. I save the grease and will mix for use next fall. Has anyone tried mixing it with cat food? My thoughts are that it congeals fast and doesn’t soak in very well. Then you end up with a block of cat food instead of coated pieces. To that end, is there anything you can add that will keep it liquid until it soaked into the cat food?

i'd just keep it on the heat a little longer, then place on a cookie sheet to cool.

I put five gallon of cat food in a ten gallon bucket and mix until it disappears. It really didn’t take that long !

Check out your local fast food joints and see if you can get their fryer grease.

Bill do you want it pellets as is or do you want it in paste form? Depending on how wet you get the dried food with the grease, you may create a bacteria or mold condition if you are making before the season and keep to use later. If you want a paste you will start a bacteria condition and unless you use it right away in colder weather it will start to decompose and mold if let set.

You got it Ron..... Use in short order and dont over saturate it. Some of the artificial flavors as shown on that bottle may be taste averse material. If smoke flavor / odor is wanted it is best to use food grade material purchased at your local market.

One method I have used with molasses might work with bacon grease. If you heat up molasses, pour a little in an empty large plastic container like the plastic tubs that pretzels come in from big box stores and roll it around to coat the walls, you can fill it with chunk food 1/2 to 2/3 the way and shake and roll it. It puts a light coating on the chunks.

Probably make just enough for a day or so to use...

I believe Mousie trapper showed me this.

I’m hoping to have a dry coated pellet that smells like bacon. I suppose I could just mix bacon bits with with calf starter and get a similar favor.
