For the longest time, only guns we had that were purchased new came from one of two places.....Walls Grocery Store in Blairstown MO or a place in downtown KC the name of which escapes my memory. Seems it ought to be C&R Specialties or some such name. They had it all, including excellent gunsmith services. If you had a problem, you took it there. If you needed something for reloading, you went there to find it. That would be in the 60's, 70's and maybe later.

As for long guns, if John Wall didn't have it, you didn't need it.

Anybody know the place in KC I'm thinking of?

Any others? Any others still in business?

I have nothing clever to put here.

many years ago, I was driving through South Dakota and stopped at a hardware store just to look around. on the back wall it looked like the RUGER catalog! I think they had every version of long gun that they made. last time I wen through there it was long gone. I can't remember the little town or store name.

sounds like Hendershots from my youth in the 60's and 70's, in Hancock MD, where the panhandle starts.
On the way to our hunting cabin in PA we always had to stop at Weavers for meal and fresh baked bread and raisin filled cookies, then across the street to Hendershots.

There were three old gun shops in Brainerd where I went to high school back in the late 50's and early 60's. I used to visit them on my lunch break almost every day. My friends and I would walk downtown from the high school regardless of weather like this just to BS with the shop owners and look and drool over the guns there. They were Hank's, Shallbetter's and King's Sporting goods. I still dream about shopping for myself in those shops and picking out guns.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

As a kid in NJ long time ago there was Rudys near a big hospital south of Newark 20 miles somewhere and Rays on 22 highway, this place burnt while I was overseas and I think that something violent happened to Rudys, it was small and fishing only I think. . My Dad always stopped there when in the area. Long time ago.......jk

To give some insight into Walls, back in the early 80's, when there was still quail and I had a dog, I got the idea in my head I wanted a 28 gauge side by side to hunt them with. Saw it Outdoor Life or some such rag. Anyway, I trudge off to see John and sure enough, he has them. Winchesters......pigeon grade.....and at least half dozen to pick from. They just told you about where they were upstairs and left you to go wandering around up on the lofts. Found one I liked and took it back downstairs, stood in line to get a price quote.....was told $2,400. Quietly whispered......."I'll put it back". Was afraid to even touch it, least I might scratch it getting it back where I found it.

But he had them. Not it....them.

Used to watch trap shooters back up to the ammo door and load out lead shot by the ton. Guys buying powder is 30 pound steel drums. And by then, population of Blairstown was only 200 or so, except on a weekend in September, when population would rise to about 300. The store was actually 3 or 4 old storefronts which had holes knocked in the walls so you could walk from one to the other and never go outside.

When I was a kid I’d walk several miles with a note from my Mom to buy a brick of .22s.

3 shops in one town in the 1850's and 1860's? Wow!

There was a gun shop in Bismarck that was in the owners basement. He had a few new guns but handled mostly used. His main business was gunsmithing.l used go visit with him when ever I was in town and drool over the guns he had. You could smell the Hoppes#9 from a half a block away.

If only women knew to wear Hoppe's #9 instead of perfume!

Hendershots is back in the same spot, I say back because they moved to Hagerstown for a few years. I do believe weavers is still open as well.

The original Jays Sporting Goods in Clare,Michigan. There's nothing wrong with Jays in their newer building, but that first location,a small building with an atrocious parking situation, was something else in the days leading up to Nov.15,Michigan's firearm deer opener. It had small isles, everybody was shoulder to shoulder but that place had everything.New guns, old guns, old military rifles, with the ammo to go with them.Traps, lure, stretchers it was all there. We used to stop there on the way to the camp in Cadillac whether we needed to or not,and as a young teenager loved every minute of it.
