Honestly I won't get them that wide, you addakg alot of extra weight to the trap you other wise might not want.

Light jaws are better, not light traps. It’s about the amount of weight the springs have to move when the trap fires. I like 1/4” square stock laminations on mine. Gives the jaw plenty of strength and adds a but of surface area to prevent the animals foot from being cut. With laminations like I use and adding a small bubble weld to the jaw tip you will not have any problems with critters bending or popping the jaws out of place.

Egh that one of those thing where with depends. Heavy jaws are more durable but why also require more spring strength. A talked with a mink trapper who baseplate his 1.5s with those heavy bas plates because he wanted the extra downing weight. Again one of those thing where you gotta look at it for a bit

Ethan its a compromise, laminations can adds strength ( if used properly) and can result in less potential paw damage. The increased mass of laminations slows the speed of the jaw closer, if stronger springs aren't included. Slower trap closer can result in less than ideal paw pinches or no connection at all.. The more mass the bigger the springs need to be to retain the jaw closure speed.

Ok i need laminations but light ones so my trap can fire faster and id like to base plate my mink traps to also add weight to drown them faster

Ethan if you are going to use drowner sets, why do you feel the need for laminations? Base plate if you wish and add an extra swivel or two.

Hay Ethan, I know it’s fun to mess around with traps. But, if I was you, I would start trapping, so you can get some experience. And then you will see what you need to do to the traps. You might realize, you don’t have to do to much to your stock trap. Good luck!

Well you don't need them their good to have and if your like me where your letting someones dog go evey other catch in that case I feel their a must. Alot if people who do the ones like in your picture are doing it for specific reasons. Seen alot of mink and rat guys laminate there traps because THEY FELT they let more toe catches. Did they ? Mabye mabye not but they where extremely sepecific type of trappers.Think those victors I sent you where from a guy who just ran 1.5's forgot why but he used them for everything from mink to coon to yotes . Now if your just gonna be using say a 1.5 for mink and you only run a few mink sets then I wouldn't spend the money in those think base plates then a welder when you can just wire a old brick or stick from the creek to your trap and do the same thing. And honestly you don't need any real extra weight alot of very good mink guy just add a extra few feed to cheap chain and level the pan. That's it. A mink or rat thats given enough chain 9/10 times is gonna be in deep water.

You do not need to do all this lol. Trust me I know how your probably thinking. You want the best and what the pros use but theres alot that goes into what and why stuff is done to traps. If you just want to just because that's fine but if your think you have to or need to you don't. When you see people with cool tricks doubt traps and say you want your like that you really need to sit back and break down why exactly are they doing what they doing for what reason and is it really something I I want or need.

For instance I thought it was cool that alot of guys coon trapping in rocky streams would carry precut chicken wire so they could toss a few stones in it since it up with a snap link and use it as a drowning weight. Though it was an awesome idea and wanted use it I realized bits not either trying here in ms. Out creeks don't have the same stones they have most of the time and since their deeper and I can drive next to them downing rods or just long chajn would work better. And since most of our coon don't go in the water why even mess with that when I can just set blind sets in the bank trails ?

If you wanna have a good cheap trap that's a little better than average premade 3/16 lams ,you can by them from most supply places pre bent for each trap $10 for a a pack to do a dozen traps and nail base plates. You can bend these out if nails with a custer trappers bender. $2 for a box of nails. The 3/16th lams will double your jaw with with either an inside or out side lam and if you want more you can in side out laminate and the nail base plate with strength your traps bottom frame with out adding too much extra weigh add a extra swivel or two and you have a good general purpose mulit species trap. Don't if for alot of folks and works well.

Sorry for the long explanation but really wanted to get the message across lol

Lil bro I'd use them traps first and se how you like em before you start buy part and what not. I've gotta traps hot rodded form other that work perfectly for what they want but just didn't do what I needed.

As in most things its a trade off and often matters where you add weight or mass.

A heavy trap wears an animal out faster so the fight is shorter.

VS

A heavy trap has greater inertia when on the end of a leg and can contribute to injury.

Personally, I like lightweight traps but I also like stout not easily damaged traps. It's a tradeoff of weight and strength where needed.

Unless you are selling to the live market, buy the appropriate traps for the animals you intend to catch and go use them. All those modifications are just bling. Yes, they look good but a wider smoother jaw is easier to pull out of, a center swiveled trap directs the foot to the top center of the jaws where it applies the least pressure, shock springs make it so it doesn't hurt when they lunge making them fight harder to escape, etc... don't get sucked in to the notion that all traps need modifications to hold your intended targets.

Again Ethan you can release them from traps that are not modified in any way. Don't buy into the BS that un-modified traps will maim or injure the animals everytime they get caught.

Then again there is a long time before season and with your enthusiasm, you'll likely need something to keep you busy til a girlfriend trapping season comes along.
