For the same reason that us landing on the Moon was good for our country. The technology is great, I guess, but the biggest benefit would be having a national goal and restoring national pride. Doesn't everyone remember what those felt like?

I'm watching the live feed from JPL's mission control...There is a great big United States Flag hanging on the wall and I love seeing it!!! People watching all over the World can see it and it's the US landing on Mars!!!

I see 2 schools of thought. One is that the earth is a death trap for the human race and we must escape before the sun explodes and burns us up. Granted, it seems to be quite a while off, but we have to continue to take small steps in the right direction if we are ever to colonize beyond the solar system, and Mars is one of those steps. The other school of thought is that the 2nd coming will occur before the sun explodes, so why bother.
