I sure have enjoyed seeing him around my corrals .I thought they all went south but this one has stayed for the last 2 winters . Was -38 and he expired . Is it common for them to winter in the north ?

Don't know their migration patterns but I haven't seen a meadow lark in decades.

I have seen them here, mixed in with horned larks during the winter months.

Seen the robins make the mistake of coming back to early before and end up dead also.

I have never seen a meadow lark winter here. About everything leaves here. About the only thing you see for birds is great horned owls, snowy owls, buntings, redpolls, english sparrows, starlings, pigeons, and collared rock doves will be in town. Some Canada geese winter on the river 100 miles from here.

It must have lost it's migration instinct

Mine must be visiting you, Alex! Seen some before thiis last cold blast, but not lately. The good ting is, the crows left. Wish it would get cold earlier, and run those sucker out before snaring was done. They congregate by the thousands around here in the early winter, eat up everything. They eat a bait pile in a day, only thing that helps is a real cold blast to run them farther south.

Thanks for the education on the various bird species .Strange that I did not know the starlings might stay .Pine beetles got most of our lodgepole near the buildings so the chickadees not around .They are my favorite .In the past I would tell my wife "spring is close " when the chickadees started singing "dee, dee .

The male Cardinals have been singing their heads off here the last couple days. Sure sign that Spring is coming.

We always get Red-winged blackbirds showing up at our feeders every spring, but had an early one this year. Wasn't -38 here, when he was here, but it was -23. He made it through it and is still around. Still a bit early for them.
