Nice video, thanks for sharing. I figure he would use a stick for a snare support. I mean what's wrong with a stick?

Beav ur old school. U know thinking productive trapping ends at thanksgiving. Comparing Iowa coyotes to wolves is like comparing October rats to February rats. Not really Nimzy. You are trying to compare rats to long haired critters and that Isn't any comparison. My buddy quite trapping Kansas coyotes about a month ago because he was only skinning half of what he caught because they were starting to break. So lets look at WI coyotes compared to WI wolves. The last coyotes I caught were In late Jan. 5 out of the 20 were hardly worth skinning. My buddy just quit on Monday and out of his last 10 coyotes caught at the end of Jan and Into Feb he only brought 4 home. So is that a better comparison. But of course we haven't seen any wolves yet. So we will have to wait and see. I’m not comparing anything! I simply asked people who catch wolves when they are worth trapping. Apologies to gibb, nice video as usual.

Fur quality, for any given species the window of primness is very short, like less than a month in most cases. Trapping season are more about people control and not so much about the fur resource. I am after the wolves because like Boco mentioned it is all about management and keeping some control of the predators. I also like the challenge that wolves give me, they are very quick learners and will quickly point out any mistakes I make. I liken wolves to a street gang, they go around beating up everything in they territories but once you catch a few the thugs breakdown pretty quick. Also it is my experience that pups and case off old wolves make many mistakes and are the easiest to catch, the real challenge is catching the whole pack. Jim
Thanks for the feedback. Yes I agree that peak prime is a short window. And harvest has a combination of access to resources. I am curious as why you go out in late February when conditions seem harsh? Do you pursue them all along or is there an advantage in going now?

Gibb. It has been insinuated on another thread that wolves are past prime in February. It would be interesting to hear from yourself and others who actually harvest wolves on this topic.
Well, nimzy around here you can trap them into March for sure and the pelts look fine. Never had one graded, because I never was dumb enough to send one to a canadian auction. We have a soft environment. Like coyotes you can catch nasty ones any time during the season. You can trap coyotes clear into March too. They will look fine and will sell fine. Most of my coyotes have never made a ride to furbuyer or canadian auction either.

I am curious as why you go out in late February when conditions seem harsh? Do you pursue them all along or is there an advantage in going now? When the lake freezes solid in front of my house it is just over 9 miles to my western boundary of my trapline, I have a big lake that runs up roughly the middle of my trapline here in North Bay. With the price of fur being what it is, it makes no sense to go hard in the fall and burn 5 times as much gas to catch fur. I can jump on my snow machine and in 20 minutes I am on my line. Plus my access is 10 times better going in Jan/Feb than in the fall. The wolves here are smaller as their main prey is deer in the winter, not something really taxidermy worthy, the best bang for me is to have dressed and sell them as wall hangers. I probably should start sooner but once the beaver and marten/fisher are caught it gives me a reason to get out there. You have to know your market and the value of what you have, if I ship the wolves I would be lucky to receive $60 for them. Picture a small wolf with brown, black ,grey colors. They do make good ruffs on collars or wall hangers. Jim

Do you always run the same size loop, and height off the ground? You're thread is especially intriguing, since people will be hanging cable in Wi next week for the wolf season. Our wolves might be smaller than yours, I'm not sure

Oh! Nimzy your other question " When are wolves worth trapping?" Unless you have a real lucrative market, mostly never. To much time, for little return. The only time they made money here was when I caught them running marten (money) line.

Thanks dirt. .I will rephrase, what makes a better wall hanger an October or February wolf? I’ve seen some wolves from the last go round here in October and it’s almost, we’ll never mind. I’m pretty sure the last of February isn’t probably ideal but itd be my preference over October and even early November.
