Wait, outhouses are still a thing? An old high school pal of mine, that has been in Alaska over 40 years, said there was always a sh*tlagmite contest in Fairbanks each winter among the outhouse users. Because the crap would freeze hard when it was sub-zero, it tended to pile up in a stalagmite that would be quite impressive. Those that didn't partake in the contest would have to periodically knock the top off the sphire so it didn't grow up and out the crapper hole. I ain't ever been to Fairbanks in the cold months, so I don't know if the story is true, or just a bunch of crap.....

Most folks keep a hatchet or a Pulaski in the outhouse !  That's almost too horrendous a concept to contemplate! Having to hack off someone else's before it impales ye! I actually have an outhouse. Wouldn't have it any other way. But, mine is positioned over a ditch and so gets flushed by the pretty regular rains. One time though, a friend came round to help me with a fence? He availed himself of the facilities whilst I got the kettle on. Lawd knows what he'd eaten. But, I popped in for my own constitutional ~ no rain ~ and staggered out, literally vomiting!  That was grim!

You go to an outhouse at night in the jungle in Central and South America... tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, giant cockroaches, oh my. I like to see all of those critters, so not to bothered by them, but it is hilarious when an arachnophobic or roachophobic fresh from the states goes for the first time in the middle of the night. Have a video camera ready.
