Birding and wildlife photography to me are a natural extension of the outdoors when trapping season is over. Studying the habits and behaviors of your target in order to understand their tendency’s and where they can be found makes one understand the balances of nature.
These Eared Grebes are a common resident here in the summer, but the challenge of getting close enough to photograph in their breeding plumage and in a natural relaxed environment can be a challenge.

Good photography. Are they male, black necked grebes? I have only seen grebes a few times in my entire life. They must like bigger bodies of water than I normally go to.

This is a pair of Eared Grebs, sexes are similar looking in these birds. Here in SD they are colonial nesters and build floating nests in the vegetation. They are typically found in larger sized bodies of water that are fairly shallow with lots of grasses and reeds.
