Checking the line this morning I got my first double front foot Yote on a NoBS K9 jr. Weird thing is that both feet were toe catches. I'm trying to figure out how this happened. The pan tension was 3.75 lbs. The trap only had about 1/8th inch of dirt over it so it wasn't bedded too deep. Any Ideas? Video here: https://youtu.be/cOtQj_SO0Fs

It’s caught. Reset and catch another. Since you are pondering...ever caught a possum by his tail? If you figure yours out you can concentrate on mine. For sure, it's caught that is all that matters. Just trying to rationalize why, you figure 2 feet he must have been committed. No I've never caught a possum by it's tail, that's mind boggling.

What kind of set? Was the trap offset or dead center? The only actual response to your question seems reasonable enough. it was a dirt hole set, backstop was a rock about the size of a football, trap was placed 9 inches in front of the hole and about 1.5 inches to the left of the hole. I get why double foot catches happen, just wondering why they were TOE catches. You figure if both feet are down, he's very committed to the set. I've never had toe catches before this one.

If you have ever watched a fox hunting mice in the snow, you see how they pounce on their target. I can't prove it but believe it may have pounced on your set but landed both feet on one of the jaws and set off the trap. Had it been centered more on the pan then you would have had a pad catch vs. a toe. JMO

JMO This is the most likely idea of what happened so far, I didn't know that you could set off a dogless by pouncing on the loose jaw. Good to know.

I don't think my theory works very will with the double hind foot catch.

Here's my hunch. Both feet were just inside the jaws but close to, if not directly over the fulcrum (balancing point of the "teeter totter'),,,,, the lever ( trap pan) of your "totter" starts at the hold down point of the jaw and extends out into the center of the base and continues to the end of the pan closest to the loose jaw ,,,,,,,,with a pan tension of whatever poundage you set, you are increasing (over gravity) the amount of weight it will take to have the lever (pan) lift the short end of the "totter" and release the/or spring the trap. Now with all that said I hunch that the coyote shifted its weight ever so slightly toward the long side of the "teeter totter" enough to compensate for your added pan tension and the jaws were faster than the coyote's reaction time so he took a ride home with you. Isn't that what pan tension is supposed to do by allowing smaller weighted creatures to wrestle on top of the lever (pan) and NOT spring the trap. Not every animal step is exacting the same weight on the soil beneath it, so when you reach the "straw" that exceeds the camel's carrying capacity, it breaks or in this case it fires the trap........................................... my take .... the mike

Lol Herb, I’ve had that on grinners but not yotes.
I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.
More trappin' and less yappin'.
