I put pheasant eggs under one of mine and she raised them and some survived for years out in the wild. I turned a couple pen raised hens loose the next year and saw broods of wild birds after that on my property. We don't have wild pheasants here in this part of the state.

I had one that would sit on the empty nest,. She was getting thin and not eating. I tried the dunking in the bucket of water. Didnt work throwing her off the nest didnt either, What did work was when I let them out during the day I closed the coop so she could not go back in until evening. That worked. She joined the flock and went about foraging in the yard.

Isolation does work and especially with a cage, or coop much different than what she is using.
Also does she use the same nest box all the time? If so block that entrance and see if she starts brooding in another place. If so then isolate. As stated before if prolonged they make good soup too.

If you want broody hens and chicks get some bantams. If you want eggs you don't want broody. Bantams can hatch out any sized egg.

Agreed. Bantams make much better broody hens and mothers. I have hatched duck eggs under them. Most fowl fanciers keep bantams just for that purpose.

Funny, so many people looking for a broody hen. Advertise her, she'll be bought in a heartbeat. Most hens now a days never do get broody. I have some young hens just started laying about a month ago, hoping one out of the bunch is broody, but the odds are not in my favor! smile

I can remember my mammaw dunking them in a rain barrel and also putting them under an old wash tub for a couple days to break them up from setting. Can't remember if it was very effective or not tho
