My dream is to hunt Alaskan moose. I cannot get over how expensive it is. Why does it cost so much to take a guided moose hunt in Alaska. What other Alternatives do you recommend for a much cheaper price. There's no way I could afford $25,000 for an Alaskan moose hunt.

Put Money away dedicate. My AK BBear hunt I saved hard-core for 5 years

For most of it I made it a Game, every time I put a 100 away I moved a .22 shell from. One bottle to the next.
On schedule after 5 years all the shells were in the savings bottle. That way I could see progress.

I bought nothing at all extra until trip time in 2018

I'm not sure how it stands now but back in the day guides bought exclusive rights to hunt certain areas. It didn't keep resident licensed hunters out but it limited competition from other guides within those areas. Rights to those areas might set an outfitter back a hundred thousand or more. Sometimes, quite a bit more. They could have a quarter of a million dollars tied up in outfitting areas. Toss in some planes, boats, assistant guides, limited seasons to recoup the investments...

Do some research and DIY.

Hunts are what, 10 to 14 days. The season is only so long so they only need so many spots to fill. Its not hard for them to fill em. There are a lot of wealthy people willing to pay, so the rates are that high and price the little guy out. A friend of mine has shot everything under the sun in Alaska. His first mountain goat which was his first Alaskan hunt was 4 grand. He shot two more over the next 12 years and each one kept on going up and up in price. His most expensive was the Dall Sheep.

personly it might be a good investment for a out of stater. one you dont know the land and are not gurented a moose with a over the counter tag. moose are hear but you have to get away from the croud. it gets crazy. you would be waseting your money with out a guide. last year was my first year moose hunting i hunted evry day for 30 days i seen a totale 5 moose and only was liegle. not to mention it took me to days by myself to ruck it out with a grand total of 16.4 mile all together hike out. if you lived hear that is one thing i spent the prior year scouting. you wont have that luxery. unles you stayed hear a while.

I am planning a trip to alaska in 2022 for moose. The guy I am going with says it will cost around 8 thousand. We will be unguided but a plane will drop us off and pick us up. That alone is 4 grand each. He went on a fly in caribou hunt last fall says he spent around 6500.

Go to Newfoundland, you can do a moose hunt for under $5000. I did 3 float trips in Alaska by myself and killed moose and caribou on each hunt. You need to dedicate yourself and you can get moose.

Newfoundland, my son and two buddies are going in September for I think the opener. They were supposed to go last year but because of the lock down they got postponed to the same week this year. They are hunting 1 on 1. The price is $6500 each. The only outside cost will be diesel there and back, ferry across and back, butchering and flash freezing, and gratuities. I believe the license is included. They can add a bear tag for pretty short money. Alaska would be a fantastic hunt for sure but that is just stupid money.

Another option is northern Alberta. I did a spring bear hunt with Mike's Outfitting, an excellent hunt. He charges $6500 to $8500 for his hunts. It depends on bow/rifle, rut or pre-rut, elk/moose combo, stuff like that. Alberta is a real real long drive and flying the meat home would for sure be an issue, plus airfare isn't cheap.

Canada, ask Boco to ask the sticky midgets to ask Trudeau if you can get in. Cheap and a blast!

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I’ve hunted NL a dozen times. I drive to Toronto from western Pa. and get a direct flight into Deer Lake. All in, ( air fair, hunt price, tips, etc ) I’m usually looking at $6500. That includes freighting back meat and rack.

Be sure you do lots of research on any outfitter or drop off hunts.

My friend and I did our research for months on an outfitter and his references and others from those references so we did not get just the outfitters pick for a drop off hunt in Alaska, we both still got stiffed on a 3K hunt, never did see the guy or any other thing after filling out his forms, come to find out he was just some hackster stealing funds.
He had set up a pretty slick thing taking funds from people wanting DIY hunts, had film of hunts and a list of references, everyone was pretty high about him and even those who were not successful fell in line that the experience was grand !

Just make sure you have a reputable outfitter to begin with, check his license and more than two or three reference's good and bad, also his area and license record.

Where are you guys flying to and from? I've made the mistake of flying out of the wrong town in the wrong plane for my needs and it cost me quite a bit more than it should have but nothing like that. Drive or fly commercial as close as you can to the area you intend to hunt and book a 185 or a 206 instead of a Beaver. The difference can be huge.
