Back foot preferred always. Some slopes don't lend themselves to back foot sets though. I that case either dig out a trench or construct a set that favors back foot or choose another method such as a snare. If the front foot is the only option choose a trap that grabs as high as possible to get above the fragile wrist and always on a drowner for a quick kill.

What ever the particular terrain dictates but try for back foot if possible.

Paul taught me to use #5's or CDR's and I've been very successful with them.

Breasting sticks are for use at dam break sets.

When I trapped beaverw/foothold I always went with a front foot. Set close to the shore with breasting sticks out from the trap on a slider. Often in 2-3 feet of water.

I had purchased #4 Montgomery's 4 coiled and later added to the jaws some more width. The chain I replaced with two swivels and chain that looked like a small logging chain.

It never broke and added to the weight for the slide.

Setting for a front foot I got the beaver walking no need for breasting sticks.Or just lay a good sized limb In front of the trap. It just acts like a stepping stick. Make sure you anchor It so It doesn't float away.
