I'm only 13 and running a 30 to 40 trap line targeting mainly skunk and raccoon but try for coyote and fox. I snar the skunk and average 1-2 a day but that's all I'm catching almost no coon and no canines. I don't know what I'm doing wrong

Are you seeing fox, coyote, raccoon in the area or any sign of them? If not, you may not be doing anything wrong. If they are in the area, it's about location. Your set looks decent.

Here is a digger double trap set up I like to work in the dirt more then in the grass a few guide sticks or dirt clods help to direct them to the pan. Only pics I had in the file.

X2. Oldest rule of trapping. You can’t catch what isn’t there.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

You MUST set on sign.
What does your local mentor think is the problem? (But I may have already asked you about a local mentor, I can’t remember)

Not everyone has a local mentor. I’m glad you found one, but most I’ve found are afraid you’ll take their spots and don’t want to share on-hand knowledge...hence the reason for questions on here. Pretty sure there was a thread about this and a lot of others expressed the same situations.

To the OP...do you have coyote, fox, and coons? I would be in your shoes if I was setting for skunks, we just don’t have many. Don’t even hardly find the flattened on the roads. Can’t trap what ain’t there.
If you do have them, then as others have mentioned you have to set on sign. When these trappers say set on sign, take it literally. Don’t set near sign, set on it. If there’s a track of a coyote or fox, make a set under that track, not near it. If you can’t set under it, set as close as possible and take your predominant wind into account when making a set. Let your bait and lures work in your favor.

My mentor is my grandpa. He doesn't trap anymore just helps me. But he never trapped coyote or fox just coon, badger, scunk

When is your hunting seasons in South Dakota and how much pressure is on the coyotes. Where I am the habits of the coyotes change like night and day when they start breeding. That could very well be it.

THIS. Set ON sign, not near it, but ON it. Your catch rates will go way up.

The coyotes are year round and I only know of one hunter and he takes about 70-80 yokes a year

The worst part for the cattle but the best part for me is that the 70-80 that he takes doesn't even put a dent in the population

It's breeding season around here, yote and fox are more interested in chasing tail than checking out curiosity or food. So what type of lure are you using?

Stay on top of prevailing winds. These can change slightly depending on time of season. Your lure odor must cross over path or field of traveling animals. Also try just scent post sets at those dropping areas.

Till that day.....

Just a thought. Possibly an isolated set or 2 with less lure might entice a spooky coyote.
