Depends quite a bit on both your intentions and your budget. I've got an EZ Boardwalk Jr, a small, no-frills kind of band mill made in Shelbyville, MO. It does what I ask it to do, and I've got no complaints. It's a simple and inexpensive mill, but its small size and lack of hydraulic bells and whistles means it isn't for everyone.

I have a Norwood lumbermate 2000, its kind of a budget saw, we built a big solid framework for it as the factory rails are pretty flimsy. woodmizer mills are top end but also super expensive. Cutting lumber is fun at times but van also be an expensive hobby.....

I have an old 8hp Woodmizer. It might be slow, but for a hobby mill it has been great

I am going to build one. I have sourced parts and expect to be able to put it together for less than $1000.

I am building a mill myself. But I am going swing blade. After several years of looking and comparing I believe the swing blade will be more to my liking.

I wish I could do both, but right now just one in my budget.

I've got the same TimberKing machine as CT Trapperman. Mine is a bit older, only 18 HP. It works plenty good for me.

Before I bought it I had a huge spreadsheet comparing everything on the market. I had pretty much decided upon the EZ Boardwalk. Then the 1220 TimberKing showed up locally on Craigslist.

It was a slightly "better fit" machine for less money, and immediate delivery. I couldn't resist.

I opted to upgrade to the 20HP.
Cut many feet on it. Hardwoods including Birdseye and softwoods including white pine. Highly recommend it!

I have a Harbor Frieight mill, we are building a better track for it right now. Personally I would not buy the Harbor Freight mill again, it's just to cheap.

My buddy has a Woodmizer LT 15 wide, great little mill. A local guy runs LT40s, Woodmizers seem to hold their value, I am going to stop by and try and buy his old LT40 with a blown engine again, I know he wanted 10k last time I asked him about it.

Jht if you don’t mind sharing, what do you call inexpensive ? Can you post pictures and are they still being made ? How big of a log can it handle.
I’ve been wanting one for quite a while , just can’t justify the expense for a hobby machine .

I run an old Timber King ( 1997) B-20, with a 27 hp on the blade and a 6 hp on the hydraulics. Has had a number of upgrades and upkeep. Used as a hobby until the windstorms of the last two years. Now I have enough cherry, spalled hackberry, white pine, oak, walnut, cedar, mulberry, and others to last me decades. Opening up a log is like a Christmas present, as you don't know just what is inside. I do some custom sawing to help pay for itself, but I sharpen and set all my own blades.

Golfball.
Building it myself I should have it running for around 2500 bucks. Thats with automatic feed and head adjustment. No cranking to raise and lower the saw head or pushing it through the wood. I will use ATV winches and a couple of frequency controllers for the speed and direction they run in. The engine is a V twin Predator with 24 HP but I am adding a separate 100 amp alternator to be able to run all the electric gibbons on it. It will have a 25 foot bed and cut up to 45 inch diameter logs. Eventually I'll put some wheels on it to make it mobile ( towable on the road ) but for now will be fixed in place on a patch I cleared for it.
