Overflow on lakes too? There a lot of them in use in the lower 48 on lakes like I was talking about from the start of this thread.

It isn't! If the floor gets frozen in a few shots with a handgun through the floor will shatter the ice underneath and aid in getting it broke loose. Ear muffs are REQUIRED when shooting inside the house though. smile

I have nothing clever to put here.

There is quite a bit of overflow right now from the moon. Hopefully this weekend it will all be frozen. Would like to go look around for animals

Why yes, there is plenty of overflow on lakes, particularly when there's about 3 ft of snow weighing down the ice. If anyone has a shanty they can drag through this, I'd love to see it. We don't get a lot of snow-free ice here. On the rivers where they ice fish on the show, they often travel miles over sandbars, broken ice ridges, around overflow patches, etc. Also not conducive to shanties.

I use my pop-up Eskimo tent when I take the kids. If I don't have the kids I prefer to be outside. It goes up in about 45 seconds and tows in a little sled. I always figured shanties were for folks too lazy to put up a tent and too soft or dumb to dress for the weather outdoors... Whoops, there I go being mean again..

... or it could be said they are too dumb to come in out of the cold. laugh

For example last night I watched a show where a guy lives on a remote lake, he goes out and chops yet another hole in the ice to get water, but he shovels off a large area around the hole and uses this hole to get water for quite some time. Why wouldn't he put a small ice house on that spot and fish though it? Now I see it's probably illegal for him to do so. Still you never see anyone fishing in an ice house even though they sell insulated tent types that could have a heater and you could fish without worry of quitting when you get too cold.

I have never seen anyone use anything like that in my area. I believe you'd get your butt whooped if you showed up with something like an outhouse on skis.

Heavy, wet March snow makes for crazy slush, or overflow, on the lakes we travel in NW Ontario.

Its pretty popular in some places. They plow the snow off/build roads etc...

I use my Eskimo out on the ice for spearing pike. It is quite difficult spearing out in the open with the glare and all. I only do this in October/November. When I jig with the family we don't use it. We simply dress accordingly. I did spear some pike this year in about four inches of overflow. I don't think I'll do that again. I do my fishing and spearing on the river as most the lake are shallow.
