my trapping vehicle, a 2001 Toyota Sequoia with 200k on it, just over heated. there is fluid all over the lower half of radiator, the over flow was empty. I let cool, filled overflow, and it overheated again, this time over flow was full. It has been 83k since new water pump/timing chain replace. any ideas?

thanks

Check your thermostat, it may be sticking

If it’s the water pump you should see where it’s leaking. May need a pressure test done.

Let it cool. Take the cap off fill radiator direct and burp it if needed. Acquire and install new cap before getting too crazy. Its likely that the coolant was low allowing air into system causing the overheat and now that there is air in it it won't suck it in just filling reservoir.

It won't defrost you window but in a pinch you can pitch the thermostat over your shoulder and drive it.

Order I would start with:
Radiator cap and thermostat
Water pump / hole in radiator
Take it to a real mechanic

Check and fill coolant level is step one in any coolant system problem. Check for obvious leaks, if none found then pressure test for leaks. If no leaks, then let it run and watch what happens. Thermostat should open, fan should start blowing hot air right away if mechanical, fan shouldn't come on until like 215-220 if electric. A scan tool is very helpful here to watch coolant temp, the gauge on the dash typically doesn't show actual temp, even if it's marked.

If it is not throwing any heat or defrost in the cab, stuck thermostat.

After filling up radiator raise the front end, start it up with your heat turned to max heat. When the thermostat opens, the air should circulate through and burp out the fill. Keep filling the radiator till full.
