Anyone know different techniques for testing Ivory samples ? Some of the mastodon ivory is strait forward but reading the grain on others seems a bit complex without a microscope

Testing it for what ?

I can tell if its fake or not by scratching it and smelling it.

My brother is an ivory expert, but he's not talking to me anymore, he still has TDS, crazy thing is, he is still angry about everything even though his guy won the election; weird.

But as I recall him showing me in the past there are fairly easy ways to tell the difference between elephant ivory and walrus ivory and maybe Mastodon ivory. I'll bet you can find something on YouTube about it.
If I remember correctly I think walrus Ivory has concentric rings like tree rings, whereas elephant Ivory has kind of a cross-hatched pattern to it, but I'm not sure.

Had a chance to get one of these a few years ago at a price much better than this... Wish I would have pounced on it.

https://www.bmvintageshaving.com/product/dovo-mammut-straight-razor-2/

I doubt I would have ever used it to shave with, but just having the mammoth ivory scales would have been awesome.

The link was bad, be careful. It said I was the 5 billionth searcher.

It did that to me once... I just backed out and tried it again. I'd love to have a chat with the scumbag who thought of pop-up ads... Just me, a 32 oz ball pein hammer, and his bare toes on a concrete floor... I'd mash them little piggy's out to the size of a silver dollar.

Posco, your top one is fossil walrus! Not mastodon or mammoth. Been in the ivory business 40+ years!

There's your mastodon or mammoth tusk. Not an uncommon find in Alaska.

Agree with Newhouse. Top one is walrus.
