If you have the right product and a buyer that wants that product you can at least break even, you just need to develop those markets.

I never had out more than 15 traps last winter. I can see no reason to give fur to a "buyer" who will profit when I do not. If I cant profit from my fur why should I let somebody else make money with it??????????
I sent a few skins to FHA in 2020 spring. They sold a few. Real cheap. Got another check a few weeks ago. They have yet to tell me what they sold in the second rodeo. Why would anybody put out the dollars and labor to trap hard if the fur wont sell? Or if the auction company you sent to refuses to tell you what sold for how much? I think FHA is going out of business. It is why everything is such a secret. I wont be shipping to them anytime soon. I may run a line next year, its in the works, but FHA isnt going to see any of it.
Canada and their zombie virus absurdity is one big reason fur prices are down. Have you checked to see what they require for international visitors? That virus is everywhere. Worse than stupid to try and stop the spread by closing borders now. That ship has sailed.
I trap for money. Why would you not? Just remember, even in low price years the people your supplying fur to will make money. So you need to decide if you want to let others profit off your work and expense while you do not.

If I ever win the lottery, ill just keep trapping until its all gone. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

You can easily make a small fortune with fur prices the way they are now... if you start with a large fortune. Or trap trappers. It seems that has been lucrative at times.

Never trapped for the money. There were years I made money and years I lost or broke even. Have always loved trapping, fishing and hunting and will continue to do so till I'm cold and in the grave. Even if they outlaw it. I'll never give anyone the satisfaction of watching me quit. Maybe get into the reality TV business "Outlaw Trappers" lol

Call up to North Bay and they will email you what sold and for what price. LLL I called and emailed. On the phone I was told some coons sold. The email has not been answered. My account is still not updated. like I said I did not trap much in the 19-20 season either. That is the fur they have and that they sold. It would have been nice to have gotten a paper receipt as to what sold with the check if they are not going to up date my account on line.

I started trapping in the early 1950s and then trapped mink alone because that is what we had. Later as i became more proficient and better equipped I became a "money trapper' as i have described myself on many occasions. My goal each year was to maximize my financial return by trapping whatever animals I thought would achieve the goal. I had equipment and knowledge that permitted me to shift from species to species, among those that lived where I lived. I studied markets thoroughly each year and by early fall had developed a plan that I thought would give me the best chance to achieve my goal, As my annual trapping produced fur, I marketed through auction houses, first to Hudson Bay in Winnipeg, later to successor Canadian auctions, when I thought that they offered better returns than local markets which I often used also. I often held fur from season to season if markets softened seasonally. I did not guess correctly every year but certainly came out far ahead over a 50 year window by informed selection of which species to target, careful fur handling and informed marketing. In the current markets and at my advanced age, there is no way that I could even break even so I have not set traps the last two seasons. Today, the only animal that I could still catch decent numbers of are raccoons and even if I could still take a few hundred each season, their pelt values would not cover my gas bill..
