Anyone got any recommendations on fishing captains in Maui. Taking the family at the end of the month and want to get out on a fun boat. All of us are pretty good fishermen and don't really need our hands held. From the research that I've done it looks like the spring in kind of a slow time there but still some good fishing to be had. We'll be up for anything but would like to take some fish back to the condo to cook and eat. The Maalaea bay is where we will be staying but we have a vehicle rented for the 9 days so we can drive just about anywhere to catch the boat. Thanks in advance!

I don't have any specific recommendations for you, but I would advise you to ask a lot of questions about who gets to keep the fish that you catch. Some boats do not let the fisherman keep any. Some might split it, some not. Craziest situation I ever ran into. I fooled my guide though, I didn't catch a thing!

Long time tradition in blue water fishing....the boat owns the fish and you get to buy them. My wife worked on a marlin boat in St. Thomas in the early 70s and it was the same. Mexico and other spots are different.

Have big fun.

That's just weird.. For what I see that you pay to catch and give, they're in quit the business.

It can get pretty pricy -In Maui I have used Maui Fun Charters, you can keep whatever fish you catch but mostly bottom fishing and is very affordable for a family. We caught fish trolling on the way out and back, if you reel one in -that fish is typically split between either crew or other guests. If you're going to be in Oahu, I highly recommend Midnight Shark Hunt, he typically holds all Hawaii shark records and is also very reasonable, it's equivalent to fishing with Quint from Jaws. I have also fished the Mangroves in Hawaii with my own equipment but the whole Aloha Cousin thing is quickly lost once you step off the hotel tourist sector, things get rude in a hurry. Also if your driving, the Hawaiian alphabet only contains 12 letters so every street name will look like the street you want.
Enjoy!

The reason the boat keeps the fish in Hawaii is because they can sell them. As I understand it, unlike most states Hawaii charter captains are legally commercial fishermen, so their catch goes to the market. Letting you keep fish is money out of their pocket. You're basically paying for the experience of reeling them in. They will probably sell you the fish for their dock price, which would still beat buying it from the retailer.

Another option, if you build a little relationship with your guide, is to work out a barter. I've got friends who take AK salmon, halibut, crab etc to Hawaii as trade goods.

So if you really hammer the fish is the tip smaller?

This is part of the reason we chose Mexico for our trip in February. That and costs.

I would recommend you just take some rods yourself. If your looking for ono, ahi, mahi (wahoo, tuna, dolphin/dorado) youll need a charter captain. That trolling fishing is fun, but its kind of expensive and you just winch the fish in. If youve never done it. Do it. The other option is shore fishing which can be just as exciting. Fishing for ulua and omilu(giant and bluefin trevally). Super easy setup. Basically need a heavy 8-10’ rod for plugging which is essentially throwing a huge plug/popper anywhere in the ocean, surf rocks whatever and waiting for the strike. Youtube hawaii plugging. Also can catch kaku ( baracuda) too. Personally im a fly fisherman and fish a ton diy. Catch lots of papio (small trevally) as well as kaku, weke, and of course. Oio

I've fished a few different places in Mexico before my first Maui charter. I don't want to disappoint you, but the fishing in Maui doesn't compare. First off, I don't think Maui is really noted for being a fishing hotspot. The small crew on the charter we were on looked more like surfer boys than fisherman. Anyone can throw a couple different color plugs on the end of line and troll along, hoping for the best. Which is basically what this boat did. Which is totally different than most charters I've been on where you can witness the captain doing his best to get on fish. Some charters in Maui will stop and "reef" fish on the way in. Which is equivalent to catching sunfish in deeper water. And, yes in Maui, the fish belongs to the boat, which I don't agree with. Sure the charters have a market for the fish the boat brings in. But all charters do in any country. Catch a billfish in Mexico, does the fisherman who caught the fish want the entire fish to eat, no way. Enough for a meal, the rest gets sold to local restaurants etc. Once in Los Cabos, the captain put my wife and I into a mess of yellowfin tuna. We caught them until our arms gave out. We kept one fish about 15 lbs, a local restaurant made the fish four different ways. It fed us both, and the entire staff at the restaurant. Those tuna have to be the meatiest fish on the planet.

In Maui, and most likely all of Hawaii, there is no restrictions or limits, or license for fishing. At least as of the last time I was there about 10 yrs ago. Its said to go way back as a native tradition for Hawaiians who rely on the ocean for food. I was there twice, both times I packed a up some tackle and a fishing rod that broke down into a few sections. Every morning I would fish from a old broken down pier that was near our hotel. I never caught anything big, although I lost a couple of fish that were waay too big for my setup, but fun. When I got sick of casting, "dock" fishing would keep me busy catch and releasing small stuff. Good luck

We took a private charter out a couple years ago. Very disappointed in our trip. Not one bite in 8 hours. A lot of claims to Maui being fished out.

Well the trip is booked. It's not a fishing trip but as much as my family and I fish we wanted to take a day or 2 and try it. I've ordered a couple telescopic rods that I plan to take. I think we'll take those and see what happens from the shore. I was hoping to get out on a boat and troll for the big'uns but I guess we'll just have to see what happens with that. Maybe we can make a deal with someone local and get out on a boat? Thanks for all the advice guys!

"the whole Aloha Cousin thing is quickly lost once you step off the hotel tourist sector"

I am not sure what is meant by this statement but if its what I think the meaning is I know. I will not go into detail here.
You can pm me. I don't want to ruin your trip but its something that a lot of mainlanders do not know. I spent most of my senior year high school year in Hawaii going to school. That was a long time ago. Not sure if its changed.

I wouldn't fish there, at least not with a guide who takes my fish too. That's about the most sleeze bag thing I've ever heard.

So if you take me trapping do I get to keep your fur? If not I guess you're a sleeze bag.

It's a commercial fishery, you're paying them to take you along. Not everything in the world is the same as new yawk.
