If people pay it companies will charge it. Simple. Stop buying stop building stop supporting this craziness.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

It started last spring. There's been many factors piling up, and I don't claim to know all of them but here are a few:
First off, early Covid shut downs last year slowed down logging, milling and transport. Eventually most of those were deemed "essential" but it still caused a little shortage. This combined with increased demand: lots of people out of work with stimulus money took on home improvement or building projects last year. Normal construction didn't really slow down either, since most builders could comply with mandates.
3rd, 2020 set a new record for wildfires in the US. This has 2 negative effects: a LOT of commercial timber burned in Western logging states, and a lot of burned houses are being replaced. Wildfires are bad for lumber prices on both the supply & demand ends.
4th, cost of living and fuel prices are increasing, which affects the whole supply chain.
Like I said, it's been a pile of factors.

Hardwood and softwood log prices have not totally recovered from the 2008 crash. However lumber , OSB, plywood, prices are way up and increasing. The loggers are barely braking even but The end processors ,(sawmills, plywood mills, lumber yards, etc,)are always the ones making the money.

No surprise, homes are being built around the clock , at least here, shortage of anything in the major buy outs.
Just like most things demands and supply set the price, it pays to be watching things if your interested in doing anything really now days.
Prices always fluctuate with demand, in a year or so things could be different might be worse.
Know for sure food and gas is moving now, after the election, don't see any stop to that either as people start to notice, would be smart to get key things now that last a while, while most are still affordable !
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

The loggers are barely braking even but The end processors ,(sawmills, plywood mills, lumber yards, etc,)are always the ones making the money. I worked for Louisiana-Pacific for five years. The plant turned a profit one of the five years I worked there. They recently announced they are doing away with OSB production and are investing 100+ million dollars in our local plant in new equipment to manufacture siding. Too many big producers in the OSB game. It's not the manufacturer making the killing.

This isn't to be confused with timber prices, which are at near all time lows. Not true; at least on the west coast. A year ago western hemlock saw logs 36' average were about $450per MBF, now closer to $700 per MBF. Western red cedar a year ago about $1000 per MBF, now $2100 per MBF on 34'-40' logs, slightly lower on 24'-33' logs. The loggers are slammed with work, trying to schedule one to do some cutting is getting tough.
