.........reminded me of some fish and fowl I've collected, but I didn't want to highjack his push-hook thread.

Have a whole lanyard full of duck and goose bands, most were locally banded. I did shoot a Michigan mallard banded in Minnesota, and another in S.D. All of my goose bands were from Michigan-all but one locally banded, and the one non-local was banded about 100 miles south and west of me.......possibly by my best buddies son, who was working with the DNR banding crew that banded it.

I have caught several Dolly Varden in Alaska that had those tags they pop into the fishes back, near it's dorsal fin. All were in Turner Lake, S.E. of Juneau. I ate 4-5 of the fish, but caught a few I released.

I caught a couple adiposed-clipped King Salmon in Fish Creek, on Douglas Island, near Juneau as well. I wanted to eat both and mount the biggest, so I carved their heads up and dug the micro-chip out of them and mailed it to the biologist after I got home and told him who I was fishing with.....they knew each other. I used a cast fish head on the mount. The biologist contacted my buddy that lives in Juneau and asked him if I was legit........he had never had anyone actually look for, and find, a chip (most folks just mail in the entire head).

Anyone else have a tagged wildlife story?

All these collared yotes had tiny little metal ear tags as well. Killed a couple more that had slipped their collar. Had the wear marks on their necks and the tags in their ears.

I’ve got a lanyard with a double loop of waterfowl bands. When I commercial fished I caught a few hundred paddlefish bands. The biologists put bands on paddlefish jaws. I caught tagged flathead catfish. I also caught quite a few tagged hackleback sturgeon.

Oh yeah I shot a cinnamon bear in Montana with a ear tag. I also helped my cousin in Louisiana fill his gator tags. We caught a big gator with a web foot tag.

! found a bald eagle dead on the shoreline of a neighborhood lake in the spring of 2006. Contacted the local DNR Wildlife Biologist who came out with me to retrieve the eagle. Upon picking the eagle up out of the water he noticed a band on one of the legs. He contacted me a week later to exclaim that he himself had attached the tag back in 1975 as he started his career. Being the new guy he had to climb a tall pine about 35 miles distant to tag a nest of fledgling eagles. He told me that at 31 years old it was at that time the longest lived eagle that the Wisconsin DNR had on record. Fitting find for the biologist as he retired the following month. I wonder if he kept that band as a memento?

Killed an elk in WY that had a tag. Sent the info to the biologist and the elk was 11 years old. It was tested for brucellosis when it was 5 years old, hence the tag. The animal did not travel far from the original tagging area.

Sable fish aka black cod are bottom fish and migratory along the edge of the western Pacific continental shelf. We have caught many tagged ones, mostly from AK but some from B.C. and even Japan. What is amazing is that they are pulled up from depths over 2000 feet, tagged, released, and survive the trip back down. No swim bladder
