The church where I pastor has a SeaArk 2472, with a 115 Evenrude Etec. I use it for getting firewood for the church and parsonage, and for going to other Bush Villages to do the ministry, such as officiating at weddings, holding counseling sessions, funerals, etcetera. In the near future, I will be using it to transport passengers and cargo to a youth camp about two hours down the Yukon River. I want to keep the kids and womenfolk I will be transporting out of the rain and sleet, so I'm going to build a cabin for it. I already have purchased a walk through windshield for it, and am planning on building a roughly 10 foot long cabin on it. My question is, what thickness aluminum sheeting should I use for the sides and roof, and what size tubing should I use for the frame? Any information you might offer on this build would be extremely helpful, fire away. Here's the boat right now.

I also plan on putting a depth finder on here, so as to help avoid grounding the boat with a load of kids on board. I have never had a depth finder before, am thinking about a Garmin one. The six inch one. Anyone have any experience with these? And would I need an external antenna due to interference from the cabin roof?

I can't go look at this boat, it's 450 miles away by plane, no roads between us.

Putting the cabin on the back like that and having just 115HP you are going to stubble getting the thing on plane when you have a few folks in there and will be pulling one heck a wake. You won't go wrong with that depth finder setup and it easy to install. Ask yourself if you want to be able to stand on the roof or just have it to keep the weather off as fits just the latter, 1mm will be just fine Are you going to weld or rivet it together ??

One difference between your boat and the craigslist one is that one has pontoons(probably not the correct term) on the back, yours don't. IMHO you'll need them with then added weight on back

Study the term "metacenter of a boat". Adding anything like you describe will change the characteristics of your boat's stability. Not as important when it's just you and firewood, but a lot more critical when hauling a bunch of ladies and kids.

A windshield and a removable cloth canopy would be a better choice IMO. Much lighter, MUCH less wind resistance. Much better fuel economy. You will find that as you burn fuel you will want to change your trim by moving your load around . That's pretty easy to do by telling people to sit elsewhere. Put the kids out in front with a tarp around them and keep the old ladies behind the windshield. Unless you are moving people every week I would opt for something less permanent, bulky, & heavy

Will definitely take y'all's advice and get the flotation pods to weld on. Dewey's in Anchorage has them. If I need to, I will get a bigger engine. I am going make the cabin removable, just like on some Wooldridge boats I've looked at. Going to weld some aluminum angle to the sides behind the windshield to bolt the cabin to. The windshield will be permanently attached to the boat.

I won't be standing on the roof, I just need it for the protection from the elements. One guy here recommended .080 sheet aluminum. Definitely going to look up the meta center of a boat.

I have considered just the windshield with a canvas topper, but those things do not last in my experience, and would be hard to replace out here. I can't just take it to the dealer down the road to get it fixed.

Thanks for your advice on the depth finder Scuba 1, going to pull the trigger on it with your recommendation.

I am not set hard and fast on putting the cabin so far back, it would just make it easier to have big loads in the front.

the Sea ark 2472 has a weight capacity of 2800 gross. 2250 people and cargo
I would be watching that weight very carefully
10 people and a little gear goes over 2250 fast even if the placards states 16 max people the coast guard measures in midgets
adding the spontoons will help some
is there a truck scale around , they are common here you might want to get it down to boat and motor and go weigh it , every pound you add is one less you can haul later
if you can before you need to start working on it , you might figure out where your weight makes it to hard to get on plane reasonably then figure materials and people and cargo to see if it is worth it
truck toppers hold up to the weather and wind and are very thin over a light weight tube aluminum frame but it still adds up the very light weight topper for an S10 was still about 80 pounds and that is only 4'x6' with short sides
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
