Thinking of tinkering with vertical drowners.

The one beaver job I struggle with is the large stock/subdivision pond. Lots of shoreline to cover, no channels, sometimes limited access or bystander issues.

So here's my thinking vertical fiberglass drowner set out away from the bank.

Eight foot predrilled fiberglass fence post. The holes would allow threading a snare support wire. Hang the snare on a drowner lock. A golf tee or scent egg soaked in castor poked in a hole above the snare. What say the beaver guys on here.

The pic is blurry but it's a 2/3 inch rod predrilled every 2" with .25" holes. In various lengths up to 8'.

I love em for supports. Big thing is how solid the bottom is and how much of the rod you can push in while having enough left to make your set.

That has me wondering as well. I really don't know how much upward thrust a desperate beaver can create. I imagine in a muck bottom I could sink it deep, one reason for thinking eight footer, but can it get wallowed around and loose. If I hammer into clay can I get it out.

I'm going to give it a try and see. Just wondering if anyone else tried something similar.

I know you're waiting for a pro to chime in... I had considered something similar due to our ridiculous snaring regs here so I'm interested to hear as well.
Thanks for asking the question.

Just happy to be here.

I have 4 footers in 1/2" like that and in hard clay bottoms, not slip/silt, and they are pretty stiff to get back out.

How would you anchor the snares or what would use as a dead man??

The snares on a drowner lock. The rod driven into the lake bottom.

This sounds like a good idea to me. Could you run a drowner cable down opposite sides? Use eye bolts top and bottom and stretch cable between. Run two snares independent of each other?

I use 4' fiberglass fence posts for rat trapping, most of the bottoms are hard clay. I've held a lot of beaver with them if you get them in the clay real good. Some can be pretty hard to get back out. Mud bottoms they can pull out but you can just about always find them in the places I trap rats.

The next issue then I guess is figuring an easier way to load and unload the canoe. LOL

Don't get me wrong I love working from a canoe but mine is a tank, an old town 17' tripper. Great boat but not a lightweight.
