They didn't fare too good in the recent ice storm we had. This is just one picture of many that froze to death in the county where I live. Black Buck antelope as well as native white tails, calves, lambs, and many birds were also lost. I have also found lots of dead wild turkeys. I think everything and everybody in our area took a hit.
Sit on your horse on top of a ridge, look out across the country and tell me there is no God.

What county? I'm in San Saba county and haven't seen near that loss here. That's a dang shame for sure. That ranch is about 10 miles west of Menard and 2 or 3 miles to the north. Kimble county had some heavy losses as well and white tails were lost as far down as Boerne and Seguin, that is the ones I have heard about. I have a few kin around San Saba and a lot of them out in the Wallace Creek Cemetery. My Mothers side of the family lived there. You had white tails freeze to death? Ours were living life during our week of -20 maybe there just not used to it? Our average annual temperature here in February are 40 degrees low and 66 high. So I would say none of our animals are used to it. You reckon ? Weird. They don’t make them like they do in the North. If I were a betting man, I would wager they make them the same way.

That's a shame.
I've been told that Axis deer antler is about the best deer antler for turning spouts for powder horns... Not as pithy as whitetail antler. I haven't bought any to try yet so I can neither confirm/deny.
Hate to see stuff like this.

seems odd calves would die too. I have seen calves born in - temps and survive.

I bet the YO ranch took A big hit. They probably did. I talked to two ranchers in that vicinity just yesterday and both are still without electricity and water. Hauling water to their livestock until they can get things going again. I don't know if this is right or not but a man told me he had lost some mature black bucks and someone with the game department told him their horns froze and that in turn froze their brains. seems odd calves would die too. I have seen calves born in - temps and survive. I have also, but we had about 8 hrs. of freezing rain with a stiff north wind and some of those born during that time didn't get up to nurse and they froze to death.

Animals that will find cover or huddle up in a herd do better in the freezin rain then temperature plummet senerio. An calf (or fawn) who the mother hides away from the bunch can get in trouble fast just like any animal who isn't sharing body heat.
The long ice coating is prolly what prevented the windmills from turnin too I would guess.

Maybe y’all could ship some of those Northern deer down here and let’s see if they can survive our Summers...should be able to seeing how they are Northern deer and they’re all equal. Not hard to find some shade and water. I don’t think you realize how drastic our weather changes here each season. You guys only go from hot to warm back to hot. Send our deer down there and they’d be 300”!
