What are some of the best ways to determine if there's muskrats in a creek. I know to look for droppings on logs sticking out of the water is there anything else that I can do to see?

Pads where they come out to rest. Bank dens depend on how deep/wide the creek is. Bottom edge sets are great in shallow water but are easy to over look cuz they don’t leave any sign.

May God bless you and give you tight chains

Slides and spots where they dig for roots.

Most of the big toilets I see are about a foot up on the bank, one of the best times to look for sign is after a flood when everything is muddy, look for their distinctive tail drags in the mud. Around here the rats also eat lots of clams and mussels, so piles of shells on the bank are places they will return to

If you guys have any pics or can describe what the diggings for roots look like.

Pretty much just looks like the start of a muskrat side with roots poking out.

I'd wait till there's some stabilization in water levels, especially if water is falling. If it's rising, and you can set enough traps to be worthwhile, looking at the feeder ditches might be worth a look.

Floats work well in the early spring when water levels are fluctuating up and down, plus rats are always looking for floating debris to rest up on and scent mark with droppings.
Rats are on the move in spring high water, and float sets on creeks will produce consistently.
A big funnel trap set below the crossovers at beaver dams will produce lots of rats too.

I'd wait until the river is at normal level since your just scouting.

Its best if your in the water looking at the bank for sign, you'll see things you'd miss if on the bank like chewing up in under an overhanging tree.( where you'll find alot of sign if there are overhanging trees)

Look for their holes, they live somewhere.
