Broadaxe... For hewing logs into beams, etc... The blade is offset to give clearance.

That's an XL pig castrator. For heavy duty applications.

Broad axe.
Looks like maybe hand forged.
One side of the notches, where the handle goes, looks like its different than the other.

It's a hewing axe. I sell a lot of that type of thing to collectors. Don't sand it off, grind on it, paint it, or in any other way booger it up. Just a light coat of oil is all it needs or it will lose value very quickly.

Any markings on it?

Broad axe used for squaring beams from logs. Block log to keep it from rolling and elevated a few inches off ground. Walk log, most worked backing up. while flattening one side with broad axe, left or right depending on your handness. The axe can be either left or right handed depending on which side you insert the handle from. When one side of the log is flat, roll one quarter turn and flatten again, repeat until all 4 sides flat and the resulting square beam will make MUCH tighter joints than round logs for walls and require much less chinking.

But in the real world, broad axes were not used to chop wood, there were other axes much better for cutting trees down or splitting logs or chopping off chicken heads.

Watched a gentleman at Silver Dollar City hew felled trees into square beams with one... log dogs, broadaxe, chalkline, framing square and some time and sweat... End product was as square and true as anything you can buy today.

When I saw the original post my first thought was, why doesn't he know what that is......then I saw the OP'r is from Kansas. Which I would guess is one of, if not the most timber deficient State in the Union.

Ya want to buy some grass? We have a lot more grass than trees overall in this state, but there are some areas of timber , especially in eastern Ks. Cows don't eat trees! Best place for a few trees is in the yard to help shade the house, after that, they're only good for fire wood, mostly!

The guys that can stand on the log and swing that or a adze along side or in front of their toes had to learn it the right way as I imagine the drop outs in that class might've bled out.
