Looking at purchasing a fishing kayak for my son. Mainly used in ponds and small creeks. Might take on a small river when water is not running very hard. He is 6' and weights 260. Any advice on one you like or to avoid?
I'm looking at a nucanoe frontier 12. Its high at $1500 and weights around 73 lb. Its 40 " wide and said to be stable enough to stand and fish from.
It can be a 2 person boat, take a troll moter or 2hp outboard and has a 600 lb rating.
It has drain holes that will let water drain out as long as its loaded less than 400lb and plugs for when you have more weight. Nice when getting in and out setting traps, duck hunting,or when it starts raining.
I'm waiting on a local place to get one in I can demo before I drop that much cash. I decided I needed something more stable after going swimming and loosing a rifle when trapping out of a cheap plastic kayak on a day I was busting ice with the boat.
I have an ascend..the.new ones are way ahead of the ones from 5 years ago.
Stay away from clamshell yaks. They're two piece yaks with seem. It's a leak point as things warp due to temperature differentials between the two pieces.
I have the lifetime 10' sit on angler, good price, lots of storage. Not a high end but suits me for casual use and I've had zero issues with it. I'm 5'-11" 170 and it's supposed to have a 275# rating but not sure how it would be with additional weight. I recommend the sit on type.
Most 12-13’ will be the best all around from small or large lakes to the ocean. Sit on tops are perhaps the most used for yak fishing as there really stable and basically unsinkable/ swampable. Here are a few brands that I wouldn’t think twice about buying or own. Also the setups for fishing are almost endless. Also most you can use wheels to get down some of those trails to the honey holes that the bass boat guys can’t get to.
Hobie Ocean Feelfree (I have had this one for 17 years and it’s taken the abuse) Wilderness systems Ascend (bass pros and their design and material is a lot better then their first)
I agree with everything Pete said (obviously I'm in yalls size range too) and so I have been researching this subject while in the big city on the bay. Here is what I ended up getting and it was way less than what I would have had to paid for a comparable Jackson or Bonafide

One of the advantages of an Ascend is that Cabelas and Bass Pro sell them and they are way more 2A friendly than Dicks, REI Coop, Austin Kayak Shop, or any of the Yak Shops
