I'm building a 16x20 pole shed for firewood and was wondering how everyone sets their posts? I've always dug a 3' hole and made an 8-10" "footer" to set them on and then put the post in and concrete around it but was considering keeping the post above ground to prevent rot. If I'd dig the same hole and use a sonotube coming above the ground and mount a 6x6 bracket to the concrete is that sufficient for lift? Just curious how some of you builders do it.

Take a look at plastisleeve.com. Cheaper than poured concrete and designed to prevent what problem you are concerned with.

The bigger shed we put up I used dry Quickcrete and packed that around the posts

Concrete and greentreat poles don't go well together.

Around here they put the concrete in the bottom of the hole set the post on the dryed concrete then pack dirt around the post. The post will rot off if you encase it in concrete.

The Sonatubes and Simpson fasteners are an excellent option. That is what I used on my new workshop. Wood, even treated wood, in ground contact is a temporary building in my opinion. Pouring cement around a buried post just speeds the rot.

Some company I can't think of right now makes concrete 6 x 6 and 4 x 6 half-lap columns that you bury and half-lap your posts to above grade. It's another good option but they are not cheap.

I recommend the Sonatubes and galvanized Simpson post bases, the ones you set an anchor bolt in the concrete for.

Yes, I'm a builder.

Eh...wot?

If you don’t set on concrete then your next best option is to tamp the bottom of your hole tight, put a pad in the bottom and fill with gravel around your post . Not dirt !

Treated post on concrete is fine if you use CCA .60 retention.
You'll pay a bit more for a laminated column but will not have to worry about decay in your lifetime as the better ones carry a 50 year warranty against decay

This is a picture on a fish finder using live scope. If wood doesn`t get air it doesn`t rot.I don`t care how much water its in.

This is true, however posts buried in the ground rot off at ground level. I've seen it a hundred times.

The best option is concrete tubes and brackets.

Second best is the .6 CCA posts packed in with gravel so they can drain and dry out better.

Plastic sleeve or other product is the way to go.

Sonotubes with Simpson tie post bases to keep the post 1" off the concrete. I've set the top of the sonotube to be level with the top of the slab so that the sonotube acts like a control joint. That way, if the slab heaves from frost, it won't move the post with it.

There is also a round plastic disk that is designed to go in the bottom of the for the post to sit on to spread the load out instead of poured concrete. Will try to find the info
