Hey all. Spring laker season is here for me and I need some advice. The fishing I do is with fly rods and mono works well for me. Recently I have been taking my 81 yr old father and its easier for him to cast a spinning rod. Problem is the swivel gets caught in the top guide now and then. I bought braid last year not really knowing what to get. i think it might be 30 and real bright. I tie a 25lb maxima ultra green leader to this with a small swivel at the back of the leader and a snap at the lure. Im kind of gun shy to just tie the lure straight to the braid. It seems so obvious in our clear water. Is there a lighter lb braid that is more camo that would work without having to tie a mono leader? or should I just tie mono leader straight to braid and continue as usual.

Scootermac is right. Thast is a great way to connect braid to mono or flourocarbon. If you dress it with a bit of nail polish or super glue it will come through the tip top smooth as silk.
Good luck.

Tie some fluorocarbon right to the braid, and use a snap on the end to attach to lure, if you want a swivel tie it on the end of the fluorocarbon and tie a short leader to the swivel, but try not to drag the swivel through the tip top or any of the guides, that is the fastest way to ruin your guides.
This one was caught on 12 Suffix braid with 20 pound fluorocarbon leader.

I do lot's of saltwater fishing and was always searching for a strong knot (PR is 100%) that would go through the guides....We have caught tuna, shark and big striped bass using this knot and never had the knot fail...
It takes some doing to tie but it is worth it nothing else comes close!
do a you tube search to find how it is exactly tied ...

That knot looks like the old bimmini twist we used to used on the big rods. It is the same I think after watching the video......jk
Great observation jk
The PR looks just like a bimini on first glance, however the biggest difference is one is used to make a double line (bimini) and the other is to connect fluorocarbon shock leader to braid on the reel (PR bobbin). We use the bimini from time to time also a great knot to know!
This is by far the simplest way I know to tie the bimini...

I use that knot for my backing to flyline connection for serious saltwater fishing. Slightly overkill for lakers but thanks for the advice. Really just wanted to know if you guys ever tie straight to the braid. Seems like fluro leaders are the ticket. Smoke em up

Also consider bottom-bouncing. Braid to the bottom-bouncer. Fluoro/Mono from the bottom bouncer to your lure.
Works a charm.
My father has had many hand surgeries. He can only uses a baitcaster. He fishes lake trout this way and does well... (He lives on a great lake trout lake, not stocked, naturally reproducing) I could elaborate on the system if wanted. But it's a great option for braid and lake trout.
